Giants Rookie Jaxson Dart Breaks Silence on Backup QB Role

New York Giants fans are calling for first round pick Jaxson Dart to replace Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback after a disappointing week one loss against the Washington Commanders. Dart was asked if he has heard the outside noise about fans calling for him to start, to which he gave a professional, team-friendly answer.

“I don’t pay attention to that stuff. It’s the nature of the sport,” Dart said. “Anytime you don’t win, people talk, and things like that happen and it’s completely different when you win. You’ve got to take all that with a grain of salt. My job is to control what I can control, be the best teammate that I can be, do my job in practice preparing the guys.”

Dart seems to have fully embraced his role as backup in his rookie season and is focused on helping the team prepare every week. If and when the opportunity comes for Dart to take the field, he’s making sure he’s ready.

“I’m confident in myself, so whatever opportunity happens, whatever may happen I’m preparing myself for that opportunity,” Dart said. “I feel like I’m going to go out there and succeed anytime I’m on the field.”

“My Job Is Just To Be The Best Teammate For Russ”

Dart was nine years old when Russell Wilson debuted with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. Now teammates, Dart is playing second fiddle to the dwindling veteran who did not look good in week one.

Wilson’s experience has clearly rubbed off on Dart; at least how he approaches the media and answers questions wisely and with professionalism. Dart complimented Wilson and the rest of the quarterback room on their brotherly connection and commitment to each other.

“My job is to be prepared each and every week,” Dart said. “We have a great quarterback room and all of us have the exact same approach of not looking so much at being on the field but just preparing each and every day for whatever and however an opportunity may come.”

Even though he and Wilson have formed a strong bond, Dart seems to be itching for his chance to take the field as a New York Giant

“As a competitor you want to be out there on the field so it’s a different perspective being on the sideline,” Dart said.

Dart’s Time Is Coming Sooner Than Later

Wilson looked like an absolute mess on the field last weekend against the Commanders when he completed less than half of his pass attempts en route to just six points from his offense.

Dart projects better as a player in the Giants young offense, both because of his age and ability to grow with the offense, but also in his archetype which is a smart game manager with an accurate arm. The Giants offense isn’t at a point where Wilson’s dynamic dual-threat game is effective, they need their system to grow around Dart, who is in line to be the QB of the future. One or two more bad weeks from Russ and we could definitely see Dart start a game before Halloween.
