The New York Giants were dealt a tough blow this past Sunday when they lost rookie running back sensation Cam Skattebo to a season-ending ankle injury.
Linebacker Zack Baun brought Skattebo to the ground with a “hip-drop” tackle, and the Philadelphia Eagle defender could be fined later in the week.
The former Arizona State standout had been a revelation in his rookie season, racking up 617 scrimmage yards and seven total touchdowns.
The Giants‘ offense, which had already lost star wide receiver Malik Nabers for the season with a torn ACL, loses another key piece in Jaxson Dart’s rookie season.
Skattebo is expected to make a full recovery from the injury and return in time for the start of next season’s offseason workouts, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Cam Skattebo’s injury has roughly 6 month recovery, which means even at the very latest benchmark, he should be ready to roll for OTAs and minicamp. A horrific looking injury, but not a complicated rehab,” wrote the insider on X.
Rapoport Provides Further Details
The NFL Network insider gave further information on Skattebo’s exact injury.
“#Giants RB Cam Skattebo, who was placed on IR yesterday, suffered not only a dislocated ankle, but also a fibula fracture and deltoid ligament rupture, sources say.”
“Surgery was right away to close the wound, and it was a success. NYG expects him back for the offseason program.”
While not common, this type of injury has happened before.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation in the team’s Week 5 game against the New York Giants back in 2020.
Prescott missed the rest of the season but did eventually make a full recovery and returned under center the following season.
Skattebo should be back and ready for the 2026 season, so take a deep breath, Giants fans.
Giants Run Game in the Wake of Skattebo’s Injury
Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh once compared the NFL to a train, nonstop and constantly moving forward.
“I’ve said it before: The NFL train stops for nobody.”
“If someone falls off the train … it’s another opportunity for someone to jump on the train. There are a lot of men on this football team…that are champing at the bit to get an opportunity — and they got it.”
While the New York Giants have lost a few key pieces, specifically on offense, that doesn’t mean the season is just put on hold.
In the wake of Skattebo’s injury, they’ll be relying heavily on running backs Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary to pick up the slack.
Tracy, the Giants’ second-year running back, is likely to see the largest uptick in touches.
He was the starter to open the season before a Week 3 shoulder injury suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs caused him to miss some time.
The Iowa and Purdue product was New York’s lead back in 2024, carrying the ball 192 times for 839 yards and scoring five touchdowns.
Singletary, the lone veteran in the Giants’ running back room, will likely see an increased workload as well.
