Giants Share Update on RB Cam Skattebo After Horrific Ankle Injury

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo will have surgery Sunday night in Philadelphia after suffering a gruesome ankle injury earlier in the day against the Eagles.

Skattebo’s ankle was caught underneath an Eagles defender as he attempted to catch a pass over the middle, causing his right foot to twist sharply to the side. He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game and transported to a local hospital for evaluation, the Giants announced.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the team later confirmed that Skattebo was scheduled to undergo surgery Sunday night at a hospital in the Philadelphia area.

Teamed with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, Skattebo brought new energy to New York with two surprising victories over the Los Angeles Chargers and Eagles. The Super Bowl champions returned the favor, however, on Sunday winning 38-20.

Daboll, Dart Devastated About Skattebo’s Gruesome Injury

Dart and head coach Brian Daboll reacted to the scary injury at a postgame press conference.

“Yeah, feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” Daboll said. “Obviously, saw it looked bad. I know you feel for anybody on your team that goes down and has a really bad injury and I feel … I know the players feel the same way about (Skattebo).”

Dart said he is “devastated.”

“It’s my boy, man,” he said. “So, seeing him going down and reacting to what happened, that just sucks. It’s the worst part of this game.”

Other Teammates React to Skattebo’s Disappointing End to Rookie Season

Players from both teams quickly recognized the severity of the injury. One Eagles player ran off the field right away, while several Giants teammates turned away to avoid looking. Dart, a close friend of Skattebo, shouted in frustration, and offensive lineman Greg Van Roten — the nearest player to him — immediately signaled for medical assistance.

“I saw him on the ground with his leg trapped,” Van Roten said. “When he pulled it out, you could see his foot was the wrong way. Obviously, that is not normal. I just wanted [Skattebo] to stay down, called the trainers out, get the cart. Put the [ankle] back basically. It’s hard to see stuff like that.”

Receiver Darius Slayton was disappointed to see an exciting season for the rookie running back come to an end. On Sunday, Skattebo recorded his seventh touchdown of the season on an 18-yard pass from Dart, marking his second receiving touchdown in as many weeks.

“It’s really hard to see,” Slayton said. “A young guy who was having a heck of a year. Somebody who is a unifying personality, an energetic personality. It’s sad to see him go down.”

The Giants will now rely on Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary in the backfield to support Dart, who went 14-of-24 for 193 yards, throwing one touchdown and rushing for another.

Skattebo, a fourth-round pick from Arizona State, will finish his rookie season with 101 carries for 410 yards and five touchdowns.
