Giants Suggested to Cut Ties With Former Seahawks Legend Russell Wilson

Former Seattle Seahawks legend Russell Wilson hasn’t found similar success since he left the organization. Last appearing for the Seahawks in 2021, Wilson has had stops with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers, and recently signed a deal with the New York Giants.

However, for some, including NFL analyst Mark Schlereth, they don’t believe that the Giants should keep Wilson on the roster. In fact, he urged them to cut ties with him right now, adding that they need to start Jaxson Dart.

“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart,” Schlereth said, per NJ.com. “I’ll take this from the perspective of what went down in Denver just a year ago. In Denver, they had Russell Wilson. They moved on from Russell Wilson. Russell, he has a propensity to take way too many sacks, not throw the ball in the middle of the football field (and) all these different things.

“They draft a rookie quarterback, and everybody said, ‘Oh, the roster is not very good. The roster is the 31st-ranked roster in all of football. Oh, it’s a quarterback who, yeah, he may be smart, but he lacks a big-time arm talent and lacks the athleticism, or can’t feel all these different things.’ And the bottom line, there was a struggle for three or four games. “He wasn’t great right out of the gate, but then he became the second-highest touchdown quarterback as a rookie next to Justin Herbert. He threw 29 touchdowns last year. Almost threw for 4,000 yards last year.”

Are the Giants Better off Starting Dart in 2025?

After selecting Dart in the first round of the draft, the New York Giants could look to move on from the former Seattle Seahawks star. However, doing so now wouldn’t make much sense at all. If anything, still keeping him on the roster would be the better decision, given the contract they recently handed out, which was a one-year, $10.5 million deal.

The Giants aren’t expected to contend anytime soon, unlike the Seahawks, so they don’t have to be overly concerned with money.

“You start your rookie and you go with the growing pains and you understand that you’re not going to the playoffs right now,” he said. “You do have a great defense, which is one of the best things you can give a young quarterback is a great defense. I think it’s just time to rip off the Band-Aid and say, ‘Jaxson Dart, you’re our guy.’”

Would Dart Benefit Starting as a Rookie?

There are some fair suggestions that the New York Giants should look to start Dart instead of the Seattle Seahawks’ fan favorite.

However, it’s also important to note that Dart will have plenty to learn in the NFL.

At the very least, Wilson can give him tips on how to grow in the league. New York understood that it was going to select a quarterback in the draft, whether it be in the first round or later in the draft. The Giants eventually went with Dart, and it seems to be the right decision.

Many like his game, but having veterans around, like Wilson, is very valuable and something they shouldn’t just get rid of.
