Giants To Work Out Wide Receivers, Hope To Add Depth To Position

The New York Giants‘ decision to try out a recently released Green Bay Packers quarterback broke some additional news.

So when 3 Down Nation reported the Giants were trying out another quarterback, Taylor Elgersma, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan tacked on the fact they were also trying to add at least one more wideout to their practice squad.

Why Are The Giants Working Out Wide Receivers?

The Giants already have the requisite three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and first-round pick Jaxson Dart.

So although they have reportedly hoped to not play Dart this season, they also have other needs aside from QB — even though Elgersma played well enough to win a roster spot with Green Bay behind Jordan Love.

Yet, New York does have a need at wide receiver. The Giants are carrying just five wideouts on their active roster, superstar second-year wideout Malik Nabers and veterans Jalin Hyatt, Wan’Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton, plus undrafted rookie Beaux Collins from Notre Dame.

The Giants also have two wide receivers, Bryce Ford-Wheaton and DaQuan Felton, on injured reserve, and just two on the practice squad — Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who were added Wednesday.

So Duggan reported that the Giants were trying to upgrade their depth at wideout, though he cautioned against Giants fans expecting anything splashy from those tryouts.

Who Is Taylor Elgersma?

Elgersma is just 23 years old and could be just a tryout, or he could spend time on the practice squad.

Duggan reported Thursday the Giants were hoping Tommy DeVito would clear so they could keep him on Greater New York. But the New England Patriots snatched up the reserve quarterback and Cedar Grove, New Jersey native to their QB depth chart behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs.

Elgersma has great size, at 6-5 and 227 pounds, and he hails from north of the border in London, Ontario and played college ball at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. There he completed more than 70 percent of his passes and threw for 10,547 yards and 78 touchdowns in four years.

He was chosen in the first round of the CFL draft but instead chose to sign with the Packers in hopes of making the team as a backup to Jordan Love.

Elgersma completely outplayed 2024 third-string QB Sean Clifford in the preseason. He completed 69.6 percent of his passes and threw a touchdown with no interceptions and executed a second-half comeback in Green Bay’s 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

But the Packers elected only to keep Love and backup Malik Willis, which left both Clifford and Elgersma on waivers. Elgersma cleared and decided to take his shot signing with another team rather than joining the Packers practice squad, which he was offered to do.

The CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold Elgersma’s rights, though he has not played for them since he was in Green Bay. So if the Giants do not sign him, or if the rest of the NFL passes on him, he is likely to go north of the border and try to catch on in the United States next year.
