Malik Nabers doesn’t care who is playing quarterback for the New York Giants, as long as that signal caller can get him the ball.
The Giants’ franchise receiver spoke out about the team’s decision to make Jaxson Dart the starting quarterback Wednesday after coach Brian Daboll named the rookie the team’s QB1 for the rest of the season.
Nabers, of course, was the No. 6 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft yet has endured an uneven start to his second NFL season — after earning Pro Bowl honors and finishing fifth in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.
He is fourth in the NFL in receiving yards (251) and has two receiving touchdowns. But he had a career-low two catches, on seven targets, for 13 yards in the Giants’ 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night that dropped New York to 0-3.
Of Nabers’ yards, 167 came in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys in New York’s 40-37 overtime loss. He also logged nine of his 16 catches in that game.
Nabers Hopes Dart Can ‘Find A Way To Get [No.] 1 The Ball’
Dart will be already be the fifth quarterback to throw a pass to Nabers in his 20-game NFL career. Yet, he seems to have no concerns about Dart as long as he can find Nabers.
“They gotta find a way to get [No.] 1 the ball,” Nabers said with a wry smile.
Nabers’ comments were met with laughter by the throng of reporters at his press availability, but Wilson’s inability to get the No. 1 receiver the ball was no laughing matter to the Giants after he posted a career-low for catches and they fell to 0-3 on Sunday.
âIâm bummed,ââ Nabers said. âAnybody would feel beat up after going 0-3.â
Nabers did not have a catch until the fourth quarter, and Wilson’s interception in the end zone late in the second quarter was intended for the star wideout.
“We gotta do a better job of that,” Daboll said, referencing getting Nabers the ball, after the loss to the Chiefs. “Just didn’t get the job done this week.”
Daboll attributed the lack of targets for Nabers as “a combination” of the Chiefs defense and Wilson’s struggles — even though Wilson and Nabers hooked up for big play after big play against the porous Cowboys secondary.
âItâs just how the game went,ââ Nabers said. âCanât do [anything] about it.â
Malik Nabers Did Not Practice Wednesday
The superstar wideout was held out due to a shoulder injury, which he sustained while trying to defend what would have been Wilson’s third interception Sunday night.
Nabers played 61 of the team’s 66 snaps. He did return after sustaining the injury in the end zone after trying to reel in Wilson’s errant throw on third-and-6 at the Kansas City 45-yard line.
Still, Nabers addressed reporters Wednesday — which is where he issued the quote about getting him the ball. That is a good indication that the superstar wideout should be good enough to go in New York’s second straight home game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
