Golf Analyst: Bryson DeChambeau Is Ryder Cup ‘Captain’s Nightmare’

Say this much about longtime golf commentator Brandel Chamblee: He’s not afraid to share his opinion, especially when Bryson DeChambeau is involved.

Ryder Cup week is officially upon us, and as Team USA and Europe trade some light verbal barbs, Chamblee dropped a howitzer on DeChambeau’s head during a Sept. 22 episode of Golf Channel’s “Live From the Ryder Cup, saying the Team USA star is a “captain’s nightmare.”

Brandel Chamblee Unloads on Bryson DeChambeau at Ryder Cup

Chamblee made the comments in response to the reignited rivalry between DeChambeau and Team Europe centerpiece Rory McIlroy. Chamblee went off on DeChambeau, wondering how much he cares about being part of the Ryder Cup team and even questioning the legitimacy of his popular YouTube page.

“I thought it was pretty poignant there when he was asked about the retort of Rory, he didn’t mention the goal this week of a Ryder Cup, nope. He didn’t do that,” Chamblee said, as seen on the show. “He didn’t talk about playing on a team and how much that meant. Nope, he didn’t do that. What he did do was talk about his YouTube channel, which if we want to talk about the numbers that are generated from that, it’s pretty dubious. No doubt bots are generating a lot of those views. There might be some interest as well. That’s what he wants to talk about, not the team, not the Ryder Cup.”

Chamblee continued, arguing that DeChambeau’s focus on his own thing could get him in trouble if he keeps his talking.

“It’s one of the reasons I think he’s going to be such a difficult person to get paired with,” Chamblee continued. “No doubt he’s a helluva golfer, no doubt he has his moments of generosity with fans — I’ve heard about them. But he’s an odd duck when he’s trying to blend in with the team, and he has so many potential bulletin board mistakes. I think he would be a captain’s nightmare.”

Chamblee Has Run Down Bryson Before

This isn’t the first time Chamblee has taken a shot or two at DeChambeau. He’s one of LIV Golf’s harshest critics, and given DeChambeau’s standing as arguably the renegade tour’s top player, he’s a natural foil. Chamblee said in August that DeChambeau would be “playing for Saudi Arabia” in the Ryder Cup, given the Saudis’ ties to LIV.

“He comes dragging the baggage of a medievally funded, every word in support of destroying the tour it speaks of, poorly ran, weakly competed tour of mostly malcontents who sought to turn their success into a pro golf game changer, only to realize the only thing any of them changed was how the world of pro golf viewed them,” Chamblee said at the time.

Ultimately, DeChambeau probably doesn’t care what Chamblee thinks. That’s even more prevalent given how well received he’s been by Team USA, particularly captain Keegan Bradley, who called him “incredible” at a recent press conference.

“We’re in an awkward spot where we sit in the golf world,” Bradley told reporters at the Procore Championship in mid-September. “A lot of that responsibility falls on Bryson. He has to make a much bigger effort than a lot of the guys.

” … He’s been more than willing to go above and beyond for this team. I think it’s a testament to what a good teammate Bryson is.”

For now, at least, it seems the actual captain doesn’t see DeChambeau as a nightmare.
