Long before there was Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, or even Stefon Diggs and Cardi B, one of the world’s most intriguing sports-show business crossover couples was three-time MLB all-Star David Justice and his then-wife, superstar Hollywood actress Halle Berry.
Now, 28 years after their acrimonious divorce, the former couple can’t seem to stay out of the news.
Ex-Yankee Complains Former Wife Wouldn’t Cook, Clean
After Justice took to a podcast where he blamed their split on the Oscar-winning star’s alleged unwillingness to “cook (and) clean,” and seem “motherly,” Berry clapped back on her social media accounts.
See her posts at this link, and at this link.
Berry made the posts, and a few others with the same theme, on her 59th birthday, August 14.
The marriage of Justice and Berry did not last long.
Meeting After MTV Rock ‘n Jock Game
The pair met in 1992 after Berry saw the then-Atlanta Braves star â who had won the National League Rookie of the Year award two years before â play in an MTV Rock ‘n Jock celebrity baseball game.
Justice would go on to win two World Series rings, with the Braves in 1995, and then again with the New York Yankees in 2000. Justice played two years for the Yankees and reached the World Series in both, though in 2001 the Yankees lost in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Berry and Justice were married on New Year’s Day of 1993 after dating for just five months. Perhaps not surprisingly they separated in 1996 and divorced the following year.
First Marriage For Both
The marriage was the first for both Berry and Justice, who were each 26 years old when they tied the knot. Though it was brief and, by their later accounts, not a happy one, it must have made a deep impression on them because now, 28 years after their final split and with each turning 59 this year, they’re still talking about it. In public.
Not that either of them wax all that nostalgic about their youthful marriage.
Justice remarried in 2001, to model and fashion entrepreneur Rebecca Villalobos. The couple remain married today and have three children together.
Justice Still Reliving First Marriage on Podcast
Speaking last week on the podcast All The Smoke, hosted by retired NBA stars Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Justice â who retired from baseball after the 2002 season, his 14th in the big leagues â for some reason felt compelled to revisit his earlier marriage to Berry, who in 2002 became the first and so far only black actress to win an Oscar is the Best Actress category.
âMy knowledge and wisdom around relationships wasnât vast,” Justice said on the podcast. “So Iâm looking at my mom, and Iâm a midwest guy, so in my mind Iâm thinking, a wife at that time should cook, clean â and then Iâm thinking, âOK if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with or a family with. And at that time, as a young guy, she donât cook, donât clean, donât really seem like motherly and then we start having issues.â
Berry has not issued any public comment directly addressing the former Yankees World Series champion’s recollections of their marriage, but it was certainly clear that she intended her birthday online posts as her response.
