Houston ‘Legend’ Delivers Telling Take About Texans’ Davis Mills

The Houston Texans do not have a quarterback controversy on their hands, but backup Davis Mills has caused quite the stir in his three-game stint as the team’s starter in place of the injured QB1 C.J. Mills Stroud.

Mills had the NFL world’s attention on “Thursday Night Football” against the Buffalo Bills in Week 12. That includes former Texans quarterback Case Keenum.

Now a member of the Chicago Bears, Keenum still roots for his former teammate.

“I was so-o pumped about Davis, man,” told Clocker Sports on November 21. “Didn’t start very strong. But, man, he is just Steady Eddie, and it was fun to watch him.”

Mills completed 53.3% of his passes for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns with 0 interceptions in the Texans’ 23-19 over the Bills.  The third-year passer had a rough first quarter, completing one of his eight pass attempts for 10 yards.

In the second frame, Keenum was 10-for-13 for 112 yards and both of his TD passes.

Mills had just 7 passing yards in the third quarter, and he had 31 yards on 5-for-9 passing after halftime.

It did not matter. He had staked the Texans to an insurmountable lead. Mills, who made it clear that he is the Texans’ backup so long as Stroud is on the team, had strong support from his defense, which sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen 8 times.

Keenum, a Texas native, spent five seasons with the Texans.

He began his career with them as an undrafted free agent in 2012. That was after his record-setting collegiate career at the University of Houston. He is considered a Houston “legend.”

After considering retirement this past offseason, Keenum has embraced his role with the Bears, serving as a de facto player-coach and emergency QB behind 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.

Stroud is expected to return for the Texans in Week 13. Then, they will visit the Indianapolis Colts in a pivotal AFC South showdown. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2023 draft has been sidelined since the first half of the Texans’ Week 9 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Stroud’s return pushes Mills back to the sideline on game days.

However, Mills may have already done enough to change his future in his three-game sample size, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. Florio relayed strong comments from the QB.

“I just want it to be seen that I am capable of going out there and winning big games,” Mills said after Week 10, per Florio on November 20. “This was a big divisional win for our team as we’re still continuing to push forward throughout the season, we’ve got a lot of games still to go ahead of us and we want to start the momentum to on a streak and get in the playoffs.”

Then, Mills led the Texans to a 26-point fourth-quarter win to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Florio noted that Mills is signed through the 2026 season. Still, the former No. 67 overall pick of the 2021 draft’s play and value contract “could make him a trade target this offseason.”
