How Baker Mayfield’s Latest Touchdown Pass Made NFL History

Baker Mayfield may not be a name that many people equate to the annals of NFL history. However, with his latest touchdown toss, he carved an unusual place in NFL history books.

With his latest touchdown toss to Devin Culp in the Bucs‘ loss to the Falcons, Baker Mayfield had completed TD passes to 48 different players, which according to CBS reporter Dave Clawson, is the most by a QB in NFL history under the age of 30. It was also Devin Culp’s first career NFL touchdown.

A True Journeyman’s Touchdown Trail

Considering the fact that Mayfield has been one of the NFL’s most elite journeyman, it makes perfect sense. Having started for four different NFL teams, Mayfield has played with a wide variety of receiving talent.

For example, in his four years with the Browns, he threw touchdowns to 21 different players. While he was throwing to such elite talent as Odell Beckham Jr., David Njoku, and Jarvis Landry, he also threw TDs to guys like Anthony Schwartz, Demetric Felton, and Stephen Carlson.

In his one season with the Panthers, Mayfield threw exactly six touchdown passes, all to six different players: Robbie Chosen, Christian McCaffrey, Laviska Shenault, DJ Moore, Tommy Tremble, and Terrace Marshall.

Still, in his short stint with the Rams, in that perhaps career-rejuvenating game, he threw two touchdowns to Van Jefferson and Tyler Higbee. By the time he got to his home with the Bucs, he already had thrown touchdowns to 29 different players.

To complete this epic cycle, in Tampa, he now has thrown passes to 19 different players. Mike Evans has the most of any player who has caught TD throws from Mayfield, with 25. Other players include Chris Godwin(of course), Cade Otton, Rachaad White, Tristan Wirfs, Ko Kieft, Deven Thompkins, and David Moore. Now, Devin Culp can be added to this highly unusual list of players.

Records, Resilience, and a Playoff Push

This is not the only record that Mayfield has broken this season with the Bucs. Across their first three games, they became the third team to win three straight games on a go-ahead score in the final minute.

Still, Mayfield was not done. In a game against the Seattle Seahawks, Mayfield also became the first qaurterback to throw for 375 or more yards with fewer than 5 incompletions in a game.

Ultimately, Mayfield is a guy who will do whatever it takes to lead his team to the highest of heights. With records like this, it’s not wonder why Bucs fans continue to cherish him through thick and thin.

Still, over the past few weeks, it’s safe to say that Mayfield hasn’t been living up to his lofty standards. The Bucs now control their playoff destiny, with their one true path to success being winning the division by beating the Carolina Panthers twice over the next two weeks. For now, fans can revel in the fact that Mayfield is doing all he can to support this squad. Whether or not it’s enough to reach the playoffs remains to be seen.
