How Knicks, Spurs Players Plan to Use NBA Cup Final Prize Money

A whole lot of dough is up for grabs when the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs clash in Tuesday’s NBA Cup Final. While each member of the winning team will walk away with a prize money of $530,933, the runner-ups will be rewarded with $212,373 apiece.

Some of the Knicks and Spurs players revealed how they plan to use the money in the lead-up to the third annual NBA Cup Final.

Josh Hart plans to buy a watch to replace the three watches that a burglar stole from him while he was staying at the Dominick Hotel in SoHo in September. Per multiple reports, Hart was robbed of valuables worth $185,000, which also included jewelry.

The Knicks’ heart and soul also joked about using the prize money in a game of blackjack to buy more watches.

“Probably a watch,” Hart said, via ClutchPoints. “I got robbed in September with no guns. I lost three watches, so I gotta start replacing them. We’re in Vegas, so if I put it on a hand of blackjack, I might be able to double it and get more watches.

“Yeah, I’m buying watches, as many watches as I can buy,” he continued. “I got a couple on the list that I want to. My wife probably will want something, too. So I’ll probably have to give her something.”

Keldon’s Love for the Wild

Meanwhile, Keldon Johnson — who plays a Josh Hart-esque role for the Spurs with his hustle and tenacity — is far less flashy than his Knicks counterpart. In the weeks leading up to the NBA Cup Final, he repeatedly expressed his desire to adopt a llama to add to his Texas ranch animal collection.

According to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, Johsnon already has a dozen goats, four mini cows, two horses, six chickens and a donkey on his ranch.

“I mean, obviously, the llama would be great,” Johsnson said of his plans with the NBA Cup prize money. “But I feel, ultimately, (I was) just playing for my brothers. I feel like playing for the Spurs organization, that was on my mind.”

Kolek is all About the Fam

Meanwhile, second-year Knicks guard Tyler Kolek wishes to purchase his dad a car. He told reporters in the lead-up to the NBA Cup Final that a prize money of $530,933 “means a lot” to him, considering that he earns $2.1 million (minus New York taxes), which is a substantially lesser sum than some of his star teammates.

Last year, Kolek used his $50,000 NBA Cup quarterfinal prize money to purchase his mom a car. As such, Knicks head coach Mike Brown is intrigued to see if Kolek would procure a better car for his father.

“I just want to know if his dad’s going to get a better car than his mom or vice versa, because we’ll find out soon which parent he likes more,” Brown said jokingly.

And finally, Spurs rookie phenom Dylan Harper doesn’t have any specific plans and instead is just excited for the holiday season.

“Christmas is going to be a good Christmas,” Harper said. “But nothing…I don’t think I have no… like set in stone like we win ‘I’m gonna do this.’ Probably go a little shopping. Little shopping, Christmas for my family, gonna be great, might get over the top.”

The Knicks vs. Spurs NBA Cup Final will tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.
