How many courts are there at Wimbledon? Map shows plan of iconic grounds

Anyone who has been to the famous Wimbledon Grounds in SW19 will tell you that not a single blade of grass is out of place.

The land is owned by the All England Club, covers more than 42 acres and can accommodate up to 42,000 spectators every single day.

But exactly how many courts are used for the Championships across the course of the two weeks?

Here is everything you need to know about the iconic Wimbledon courts with the 2025 tournament now underway.

How many courts are there at Wimbledon?

A total of 18 courts are used for matches during the fortnight of Wimbledon.

As well as the match courts, Wimbledon also has 20 practice courts and eight American clay courts.

Centre Court is the biggest with a capacity of 14, 979, whilst Court 1 can hold 12, 345 spectators at any one time.

Court 2 is the third-biggest court with a capacity of 4,000 whilst the final Show Courts are made up of Courts 3, 12 and 18.

Centre Court has had a roof since 2009 and Court 1 was granted the same privilege in 2019.

During the Championships, the courts are re-lined, rolled and mown every day whilst wear, hardness and ball rebound are also subject to daily checks.

Matches are allocated to courts in ‘the interests of players, spectators, national and international TV, radio and online audiences, and the press.’

What happens to the courts for the rest of the year?

The grass courts, except Centre Court and the other Show Courts, are used from May to September by Club members and LTA players.

According to the Wimbledon website, they are also ‘lent to a number of clubs and organisations, mainly of a national character, for the staging of various events.’

A full renovation of the playing surfaces then takes place in September.

The rest of the courts are in use all-year round.
