Alvaro Carreras has completed his move from Benfica to Real Madrid and Manchester United are set to cash in as a result.

The 22-year-old will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday afternoon, returning to the club after spending three years in the youth set-up with the Spanish giants.

The full-back left Real Madrid for Manchester United in 2020, but failed to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils.

After loan spells with Preston and Granada he joined Benfica on loan and then made that transfer permanent last summer after an impressive start to life in Portugal.

The transfer proved to be a bargain for Benfica, spending just £5m on the Spaniard, who would go on to make 52 appearances and score four goals last season.

United were linked with a move to re-sign him in January this year after his eye-catching performances and Real Madrid were certainly impressed as they have now signed him for €50m (£43m) and handed him a six-year contract.

While Carreras may seem like one that got away at Old Trafford, Manchester United will at least earn a decent amount of money from his big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester United’s sell-on clause for Carreras

When the Red Devils sold the left-back to Benfica they inserted a sell-on clause in the deal which sees them receive 20 per cent on any profit made on Carreras.

With Benfica selling Carreras at a profit of around £38m, Manchester United are owed 20 per cent of that sum, which will see them pocket around £7.6m.

Not a bad windfall on a player who made it to the bench for Premier League matches but never got on the pitch in a first team game for the Red Devils.

Elanga’s move also boosts Man Utd’s funds

This will be the second time this summer that Manchester United have cashed in on one of their former players making a big-money move.

Newcastle have signed Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £52million with a further £3million in add-ons.

The Red Devils sold the winger to Forest in the summer of 2023 for £15m, deeming the Sweden international to be surplus to requirements.

Elanga has been impressive since making the switch to Forest and has earned himself a return to the Champions League with the Magpies.

Manchester United included a 15 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Elanga, which will see them earn around £6m from the profit Forest have made on him.

The income is a boost for the club as they look to revamp Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer, which is proving difficult.

Matheus Cunha from Wolves remains the only major signing so far this summer, while Paraguayan teenager Diego Leon has also arrived from Cerro Porteno.
