Carlos Alcaraz Believes Andrey Rublev is the Most Powerful Player on Tour

Although Carlos Alcaraz has a 3-1 head-to-head record against Andrey Rublev, the world No. 2 is heading into today’s match knowing that when Rublev’s forehand is dialed in, it can be problematic for anyone.

Back in early July, after a win over Rublev in the fourth round of Wimbledon, Alcaraz spoke about Rublev’s power during his on-court interview at SW19, explaining:

“Andrey is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful player that we have on tour without a doubt. With that aggressive to the ball with that forehand. It’s really difficult to face him. You feel he’s pushing you to the limit in every ball, running from side to side, so that’s make [it] really difficult to face him.”

As Alcaraz went on to explain at the time, because of Rublev’s power, he had to rely on a tactically sound game when rallying from a set down.

Andrey Rublev Explains Challenges of Facing Alcaraz

Ahead of today’s Cincinnati Open quarterfinal clash, Andrey Rublev knows that beating the world No 2 will be no easy task.

Rublev hasn’t prevailed against Alcaraz since the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid last year, and since then, the five-time Grand Slam champ has won both of their meetings, defeating Rublev at the Nitto ATP Finals last year, and Wimbledon this year.

Ahead of today’s Alcaraz vs. Rublev match, the world No. 11 spoke with Russian outlet MORE! about the challenges that come with facing Alcaraz (h/t TennisGazette)

“I just need to keep building, consolidating and improving, so that I can sustain that level for a long time, without any dips. At that level, one or two points, and you get broken. Against players like that, you have to play at that level for four hours without losing focus even slightly. That is what I am aiming for.”

Whether Rublev can prevail, only time will tell.
