Mike Tyson believes Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez may have the edge when he takes on Terence Crawford.

Crawford is seeking to make more history when he moves up two weight classes to challenge Canelo for his undisputed super-middleweight crown in the biggest fight of 2025 on 13 September.

Crawford cemented his status as a pound-for-pound superstar with his demolition job on Errol Spence Jr in 2023 when he was crowned undisputed welterweight champion but is in unchartered waters up at 168lbs.

Canelo has won world titles at four different weight classes but has been at his peerless best at super-middleweight, unifying the division in 2021, having reigned supreme ever since.

The Mexican superstar as also fought as high as light-heavyweight (175lbs).

Heavyweight legend Tyson is eager to see Crawford become just the third man after Floyd Mayweather Jr and Dmitry Bivol to beat Canelo.

While both men will tip the scales at roughly the same weight ahead of fight night, Tyson fears it may be too big an ask for the American.

‘It’s tricky, I want Crawford to win, but it doesn’t look like it is going to happen,’ ‘Iron Mike’ told The Big Podcast.

‘I would like for that to happen, but this guy [Canelo] is a hard puncher; he is a smart fighter.

‘I am just curious, I just wanna see it. I wanna be there to see it. Because listen, there’s been upsets like that before.

‘Henry Armstrong at 124 lbs, he beat the 146 lbs champ [Barney Ross]. So, you know, you never know. Anything can happen when two men are in the ring.’

Tyson cited Henry Armstrong’s win over Barney Ross as an example of a fighter moving up through the weight classes to shock the world.

But Canelo has history of putting away fighters moving too far out of their comfort zone.

In 2016, Amir Khan made a similar move from welterweight to challenge for the Mexican’s middleweight titles – suffering a devastating sixth round knockout.

In 2023, undisputed light-middleweight champion Jermell Charlo moved up to try and take Canelo’s titles from him but was soundly beaten across 12 rounds.
