Indiana Pacers Rookie Arrested in Indianapolis

Indiana Pacers rookie Kam Jones was arrested on the morning of October 20 following what was described as a brief pursuit on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis, according to Indiana State Police and reported by WTHR

Jones, a 23-year-old second-round pick in this year’s NBA Draft drafted out of Marquette, was reportedly stopped after an officer attempted to pull him over for alleged erratic driving.

Police said the driver did not immediately stop but was detained without further incident a short time later, WTHR’s report said. According to Marion County Sheriff’s Office records, the player was booked on preliminary charges of reckless driving and resisting law enforcement. He was being held on Monday afternoon at the Marion County Jail.

When contacted for comment by the TV station, the Pacers released a short statement:
“We are aware of the situation involving one of our players. We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any additional comment on the matter at this time.”

What It Means for the Pacers

The rookie has not yet appeared in an NBA game and is currently recovering from a back injury, which Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said would sideline him until November 9. He was expected to spend time with Indiana’s G League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom, once cleared to play.

The incident comes as the Pacers finalize roster preparations ahead of the 2025–26 regular season. The organization has emphasized accountability and professionalism under Carlisle, and will likely await further information before taking any internal action.

While the Pacers weren’t expected to use Jones extensively this season, there certainly could have been some opportunities for him at point guard, especially since star guard Tyrese Haliburton is out for the season as he recovers from an Achilles injury suffered in the NBA Finals. Jones is currently listed as the No. 4 point guard on the depth chart, behind Andrew Nembhard, T.J. McConnell and Quenton Jackson

Jones played a major role for Marquette during his four seasons with the team. As a senior, he averaged 19.2 points, 5.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Helping the Golden Eagles to a 23-11 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He was named a second-team All-American last season.

Pre-draft analysis from RotoWire said: “Jones plays with the ball in his hands, making up for his below-the-rim athleticism by using excellent footwork, physicality and a repertoire of moves to free himself from the defense. He evolved as a passer during his four years at Marquette, notably posting a 5.9 assist to 1.9 turnover ratio as a senior. That said, he doesn’t always have to have the ball in his hands and is a proven spot-up shooter with room to improve his free-throw percentage. On defense, Jones plays hard and likes to pressure.”

What’s Next

Jones is expected to make an initial court appearance later this week. The Pacers open the regular season on October 23 against the Oklahoma City Thunder (TV: ESPN).

The team is not expected to issue further statements until local authorities provide additional details or formal charges are filed.
