The Indianapolis Colts are off to a start that virtually no one saw coming. When it’s August and you still haven’t decided between a journeyman quarterback who flamed out in New York and a recent high draft pick who just isn’t the guy, you probably aren’t primed for a huge season.
But, the Colts absolutely pounded the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday 40-6 and it wasn’t as close as last year’s Super Bowl. It was their largest margin of victory since October of 2009 when they slammed the St. Louis Rams 42-6. You can guess who their quarterback was then and the season finished with a Super Bowl appearance.
They are now 4-1 on the season and have accrued some interesting historical facts with Daniel Jones under center.
The Indianapolis Colts scored touchdowns on six straight possessions
A special ‘thank you’ to Matt Conti, Vice President of Football Communications for the Colts, for pointing out this stat. I’m not a gambling man, but I’d be curious what the preseason odds were that the Colts would – at any point in this season – score touchdowns on six straight possessions.
But, that’s what happened on Sunday against the Raiders.
“Following @JayT23 3rd TD of the game, the #Colts have tied a team record scoring touchdowns on six consecutive possessions which was last accomplished in Week 2 of 2001 at Buffalo,” Conti posted on X.
The Colts had three possessions in the second quarter and another three in the third quarter. Yep, you guessed it, all six got into the end zone. Three were by running back Jonathan Taylor (who is having a hell of a 2025), one was by wide receiver Michael Pittman, another by rookie phenom tight end Tyler Warren and one by running back Ameer Abdullah.
It does help when your defense and special teams give you short fields on two of those possessions thanks to an interception and blocked punt, but still, six in a row is six in a row.
Indianapolis Colts are actually blowing people out
Most observers speculated before the season that the offense was going to struggle to score points. And let’s be clear, these weren’t hot takes. When there is a coin flip between Jones and 2023 fourth-overall draft pick Anthony Richardson, it’s really easy to predict major problems for the offense.
But, so far the Colts have been lighting it up to a degree. Don’t forget, this team didn’t punt a football until Week 3 of the season. Read that again and tell me if you’d have put money on that happening in the first week of September. If you would have, then I’ve got some other bets to throw your way. 10 gets you 20.
Speaking of 20, the Colts are beating other teams by more than that now. Surprised? I am.
The Colts have beaten three teams by 20+ in just the first five weeks of the 2025 season,” Josh Wilson of Stampede Blue posted on X. “They had zero 20+ point wins TOTAL from 2022-2024.”
Perhaps that says as much or more about the Colts of the last few years than it does about the 2025 version. Regardless, the Colts are rolling right now in an AFC South division that is begging to be rolled. If the Jacksonville Jaguars lose to the Chiefs tonight, the Colts will be in sole possession of first place.
