IndyCar Series driver David Malukas was airlifted from the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix on August 31 “as a precaution” following a crash on lap 83.
Malukas, who had qualified second, was running in second place when rookie driver Louis Foster, a lap down, nudged Malukas as Malukas attempted to lap Foster on the outside and the two crashed at high speed.
The graze sent Malukas’ No. 4 car into the wall and he came to stop why sitting on a banking.
After the crash, Malukas could be heard expressing frustration over the radio. He exited the car on his own, but moved cautiously as he made his way to the waiting medical vehicle. A short time later, he was examined at the infield safety center before being transported to a trauma center for further evaluation.
“David’s doing well,” Dr. Julia Vaizer, the IndyCar medical director, told FOX. “He’s awake. He’s alert. He is in really good spirits. We’re just sending him to the trauma center for some precautionary evaluation and advanced imaging.”

David Malukas has Been Released from the Hospital
According to Bob Pockrass, motorsports reporter with FOX Sports, Malukas was released from the hospital just a few hours after being airlifted there. Since the 2025 IndyCar season concluded with the Nashville race, Malukas now has the entire offseason to recover and prepare for the upcoming season.
IndyCar penalized Foster, requiring him to serve a pass-through penalty under green-flag conditions.
Racing legend Marco Andretti took to X during the race to voice his displeasure with Foster. “You have to step in on this kind of driving,” said the 2006 IndyCar Series rookie of the year.
Louis Foster Barely Wins IndyCar Rookie of the Year
Foster began the race with an eight-point lead over Robert Shwartzman in the rookie of the year standings. After the final race at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix on Aug. 31, Foster secured the award by a narrow two-point margin.

“I’m super pleased,” Foster said, according to Racer.com. “I think one of the main goals we had this year was to win this title. A lot of bad luck at the start of the year meant it was probably closer than I would have wanted to be, honestly. Kind of had to hang on at the end and really hope that Robert messed up, which he did, because we didn’t have the car today.
“Beside that, the RLL team have been absolutely incredible all year. We’ve had our ups and downs, but I think we’ve been able to bounce back from those downs pretty well. All credit goes to them.”
Foster is the son of British Touring Car Championship racer Nick Foster.
