Insider Believes Brooklyn Nets Could Trade Their Best Player

The Brooklyn Nets are a team that is rebuilding. They aren’t the worst team in the NBA as many pundits predicted, though. Brooklyn has the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference. For most of this season, they have been without the services of Cam Thomas.

Thomas is viewed as the Nets’ best player. His ability to score the ball from anywhere on the court is something that only Michael Porter Jr. possesses. Those two guys are the main scorers on the roster. Unfortunately, Thomas has not played in over a month due to a hamstring injury.

While Thomas is making progress, he has just been cleared to start doing on-court work again. According to one NBA insider, the Nets might be open to trading him in the next few weeks.

Brooklyn Nets Guard Cam Thomas Could Get Traded

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Nets are considering moving Thomas sometime before the trade deadline. Thomas has been playing this season on a qualifying offer after being unable to come to an agreement during restricted free agency over the summer.

“Brooklyn could also work with Cam Thomas’ agents at Octagon to navigate his future, potentially via trade, as he plays the remainder of the season on the qualifying offer and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Thomas is averaging 21.4 points but hasn’t played since Nov. 5 after injuring his hamstring,” Charania wrote.

Thomas has scored over 20 points per game in each of the last two full seasons and is on pace to do so again this year. He is the one young scorer that the Nets have. Unfortunately, he has yet to play more than 67 games in a season in the four-plus seasons he’s logged.

The Nets Could Absorb Salary in Trades With Other Teams

Charania notes that the Nets could be looked at as a team that could absorb salary in exchange for assets as they continue their rebuild.

“The Nets have $15 million in cap space and can create more, which has led to increased trade talks about using their room to absorb salary while receiving assets, sources said. The Nets, Pistons ($14.1 million trade exception) and Utah Jazz ($18.4 million trade exception) are the only teams with significant room that can take in larger deals and not be impacted by the apron.”

Brooklyn still has to figure out who is going to be part of their core moving forward. hey made five first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, and they have only given playing time to two of them so far this season. That might change if some trades are made before the deadline in February.

Thomas is going to be the most sought-after player that the Nets could send in a trade. However, teams need to see that he can stay healthy for a sustained period of time before making a deal for Thomas. Thomas might be back on the court at the end of the month.
