Insider Claims Sacramento Kings Could Make Wholesale Changes

The Sacramento Kings have been one of the worst teams in the Western Conference this season. They have the third-worst record in the West. Right now, they are dealing with some injuries, including to Domantas Sabonis.

Sabonis suffered a partially torn meniscus three weeks ago. He hasn’t played since, and he won’t be playing anytime in the near future. He has been their most consistent player since coming over in the Tyrese Haliburton trade with the Pacers.

With how poorly the season has gone, one NBA insider believes that the Kings could end up making wholesale changes if they are given the right price to do so.

Sacramento Kings Could Trade Key Players

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Kings are open to trading many of their best players. That includes Sabonis, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Keon Ellis. Charania notes that other teams are monitoring their availability.

“They are open-minded about trade talks throughout the roster, sources said. Teams are monitoring veterans Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan, along with 25-year-old guard Keon Ellis.”

Sacramento is led by a new GM. This is Scott Perry’s first year on the job with the Kings. He is open to moving anyone who doesn’t fit the culture that he is trying to build. That could include any of those four players, as well as some older players on the roster.

Russell Westbrook is 37 years old, so the Kings might be looking to move on from when the season ends, as well. Right now, they are in an evaluation period for the entire roster as they head towards another season that will likely end with a trip to the NBA lottery.

Teams Are Eyeing The Kings’ Roster

Sacramento is a team that other teams in the league are watching closely as the deadline appears. If the Kings do decide to part ways with their core players, teams competing for a title are going to give them some offers for their older players.

The Kings have two more months to evaluate the strength of their roster and make final determinations for what they will look like next season. Sacramento still has its first-round pick this season, and will for three out of the next four seasons, as well.

LaVine is the player who is least likely to get moved because of his large contract and extensive injury history. He has one more year left on his deal and will get paid $48.9 million next season. Under the new CBA, it has become very hard for teams to trade large contracts.

With Sacramento still sitting at the bottom of the West, nothing will be off limits for this franchise as they head towards the trade deadline. How they attack this deadline will be an indication of how they view the roster heading into free agency and their level of contention next season.
