Insider Drops Report on ‘Serious’ Development With Top Chiefs Coach

There’s no sugarcoating it: 2025 is a lost season for the Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid’s team will miss the playoffs for the first time in over a decade, making each remaining game carry less importance to many on the outside.

Kansas City doesn’t plan on giving up on improving, though. Someone is always watching, whether it be an internal evaluator or a potential future employer.

Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans could breathe new meaning into the latter possibility for offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Insider: Matt Nagy a ‘Serious’ Candidate for Titans’ Head Coaching Job

In a December 20 story for The Athletic, insider Dianna Russini provided an update on Tennessee’s search for a new head coach. Early in her report, Nagy’s name was mentioned.

Per Russini, Nagy is a “serious candidate” for the vacancy.

“Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi and president of football operations Chad Brinker are leading the organization’s head coaching search, and I’m told their list is taking shape,” Russini wrote. “Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is viewed internally as a serious candidate. Nagy will be in Nashville on Sunday with Kansas City, but NFL rules state there can’t be any job discussions.”

Russini went on to list several other names, many on the defensive side. Coordinators like Lou Anarumo (Indianapolis Colts), Jesse Minter (Los Angeles Chargers), Chris Shula (Los Angeles Rams) and more are possibilities for interviews. Given the presence of current rookie quarterback Cam Ward, however, perhaps an offensive-leaning mind like Nagy makes some sense.

This isn’t the first time Nagy’s name was linked to the Titans. Back in October, a report surfaced that he was a “name to watch” for the gig. Tennessee has spent weeks making its list and checking it twice. With Christmas time arriving, those plans appear to be coming to fruition a bit more.

Nagy, 47, spent four years as the Chicago Bears‘ head coach from 2018-2021. He led the team to a 34-31 record in that span, including two trips to the postseason. He also has as many years with the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator, giving him plenty of coaching background.

Chiefs’ 2025 Offensive Performance May Neither Help Nor Hurt Nagy

Given Kansas City’s struggles this year, it remains to be seen whether that could be a mark against Nagy. The team’s offense hasn’t exactly been perfect since he returned for his second stint in town. This year’s group is eighth in points per drive and first in plays per drive, yet it’s 15th in total scoring. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, statistically, had one of his worst seasons before going down with a torn ACL and LCL.

Peeling back that onion a little bit shows more layers. Per rbsdm, the Chiefs have the No. 8 offense by EPA/play standards and are seventh in success rate. From the beginning of the campaign to through Week 9, they were fourth in EPA/play and success rate alike. Coming out of their bye, however, it’s been a different story.

Since Week 11, the Chiefs average -0.010 EPA/play, 17th in the sport. Their 42.3% success rate is 21st. Out of 29 quarterbacks with 150+ plays in that span, Mahomes is 15th in adjusted EPA/play, sandwiched between a pair of backups: Marcus Mariota of the Washington Commanders and Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons.

Nagy and company are 1-4 in that stretch. Their lone victory was a come-from-behind triumph over the Colts just days before Thanksgiving. Since their 5-3 start to the year, the reigning AFC champions have dropped five of six and are reeling entering Sunday’s game against the Titans.

Should the Chiefs snap out of their funk and deliver and inspired performance behind backup signal-caller Gardner Minshew — as well as with plenty of others hurt — perhaps Nagy can make a good impression on Tennessee.
