Insider Gives Troubling Job Security Update for Jets HC Aaron Glenn

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn’s job might not be safe after all.

NFL Insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said, “I still think there is a chance that it’s going to be one-and-done for Aaron Glenn in New York. I think this move that he made is a manifestation of what he is feeling right now. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as he is three weeks away from possibly being one-and-done as the New York Jets head coach.”

“[Steve Wilks] was fired by Aaron Glenn. The thing that just strikes me as odd here, Aaron Glenn is a defensive head coach, and he fired his defensive coordinator. There is just something odd about that. If the defense is so bad that the coordinator should be fired, I think you’re putting yourself a little too close to the flame,” Florio explained on “PFT Live.”

Insider Explains Why Wilks Firing Opens Questions About AG’s Future

“I’m a big believer in admitting mistakes and not doubling down, but you’re still admitting the mistake. He is admitting, by firing Wilks, that what he did is what he shouldn’t have done. I know [Chris] Simms has been big on this all year long, and we have seen it with offensive coaches. When you become a head coach, you don’t abandon your offense. You bring your offense, and you run your offense,” Florio explained on “PFT Live.”

“The only time that I think it worked for a defensive guy is when Mike Tomlin went to Pittsburgh because they had that 3-4 zone blitzing system perfected. So even though Tomlin was a Tampa-2 guy, Dick LeBeau, he’s got it — I’m not going to mess with it. It’s working, I’m not going to screw it up. That is far different from I’m just going to bring in some coordinator and let him run a defense even though it is different from mine. So I think there is a chance that Aaron Glenn is going to be one-and-done and we’ll see what the Jets do,” Florio continued.

Chances of AG Getting Canned Seem Next to Impossible

Despite what Florio explained on his show, it seems extremely unlikely that Glenn will be fired come season’s end.

Jets Owner Woody Johnson gave a public vote of confidence to Glenn on Tuesday, October 21. Since that moment in time, the Jets have gone 3-4 after a 0-7 start to the season.

“There is a big talking point on Jets Twitter that I’ve seen about this potentially being one-and-done and the Jets firing Aaron Glenn after one year. I think there is a 0% chance of that happening. They’re paying this guy a ton of money. Like, he is almost getting double what Robert Saleh got. I think it’s close to $12 million per year that Aaron Glenn is getting to coach the Jets. Coaching contracts are guaranteed,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY revealed on “Jets Final Drive” on October 6. “I would be beyond floored if they fired him after one year. I literally think there is a 0% chance of that happening.”

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Glenn signed a five-year deal when he agreed to be the HC of the NYJ.

The Trade Deadline Activity Was the Ultimate Vote of Confidence for AG

If there was any chance that Glenn could have been fired this year, he wouldn’t have been allowed to pull the trigger on big deals.

Ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, the Jets shipped off two cornerstone pieces. For those types of moves to be executed, it merits approval from ownership.

Mr. Johnson wouldn’t have said yes to trading Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams only to fire Glenn months later. This was clearly a long-term play. Over the next two calendar years, the Jets have five first-round picks and three second-round picks.

If anything, the trade deadline deals confirmed that Glenn isn’t going anywhere until at least 2027.
