The New York Jets fell to 2-8, and Justin Fields played poorly against the New England Patriots.
Following his performance, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic went scorched Earth, saying, “That should be Justin Fields’ last snap as the Jets quarterback. Enough.”
Fields completed 58% of his passes, threw for 116 passing yards, and had one passing touchdown.
That was his fifth game this season in which he threw for under 117 passing yards. In four of those five contests, he has thrown for under 55 passing yards.
Top Social Media Reactions to Fields Performance vs Patriots
ESPN radio host Jake Asman bluntly said, “Justin Fields is not an NFL QB. Enough.” He posted that caption with a screenshot of Fields’ game log so far this season.
A fan posted on social media, “Justin Fields is a really good dude. In the nicest way possible I never want to watch him play football for the Jets again.”
Asman came back to social media to post another zinger, writing, “Justin Fields should never start another game for the Jets. The Jets paid 30 million guaranteed for a more mobile Zach Wilson. Pathetic.”
NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright said, “[the] Jets knew they were in for a build on the offensive side & were going to have to make some moves on the defensive side when they brought this front office/coaching staff in, but Justin Fields as the bridge was about as unserious a move as you could make.”
“It’s never been more over for Justin Fields,” Jets content creator Matt O’Leary posted.
In the fourth quarter, Jets center Josh Myers fired off a low snap to Fields. Instead of jumping on the ball, he tried to pick it up and continue the play. The ball bounced around and was collected by the Patriots.
On the NFL on Prime broadcast, they revealed that it was the 48th fumble of Fields’ career, which is the “most in the NFL.” Barstool Sports reacted to that by saying, “[the] most normal Justin Fields stat.”
The Excuses Have to Stop for Fields
Did receivers drop passes? Yes. Would he have fumbled that ball if the snap hadn’t been so low? Probably not.
However, when you look at his stats this season, there are only so many excuses you can make. At a certain point, as an NFL quarterback, you either have to [expletive] or get off the pot.
It feels like Fields is playing a different sport than everybody else in the NFL.
The Jets should make a quarterback change. The only other option on the 53-man roster is Tyrod Taylor. The Jets also have undrafted free agent Brady Cook on the practice squad.
It wasn’t all bad for Fields. The Jets got back to the QB running game in this contest, and it seemed to work beautifully.
Fields finished with 11 carries for 67 rushing yards and a touchdown. He averaged 6.1 rushing yards per attempt.
Head coach Aaron Glenn revealed after the game that the reason they didn’t want to do it more is that it would put Fields in harm’s way.
If the Jets are afraid to run the ball with Fields consistently, then I’m afraid it’s already over. The unique thing that Fields brings to the table is his ability to run. They certainly aren’t keeping him in the game for his passing prowess.
If the Jets make a QB change to Taylor or Cook, they should still set aside a package of plays to maximize Fields’ rushing talents on offense.
