Insider Has Bold Take on Lakers’ Plans at the Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers have rarely sat still when it comes to roster upgrades. Whether through free agency or the trade market, the franchise has a history of bold moves. Rob Pelinka has already proved he’s willing to swing big — most recently landing Luka Dončić in one of the splashiest trades in league history. With LeBron James entering the twilight of his career, that mindset isn’t expected to change anytime soon.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Lakers are once again projected to be aggressive as the 2025 trade deadline approaches.

“The Lakers are an interesting team to discuss regarding trades, as they will undoubtedly explore all avenues to increase their championship odds before February’s trade deadline. Los Angeles has over $100 million in expiring contracts and wasn’t afraid to take chances on upgrades last season,” Siegel wrote.

Lakers’ Deadline Needs Focus on Defense

If Los Angeles does make a splash, the focus will likely be on the defensive end. James, Dončić, and Austin Reaves provide plenty of firepower, but the playoffs exposed the Lakers’ vulnerability on the perimeter. A strong defensive wing who can guard multiple positions remains a priority.

Siegel predicted that “adding more talent on the wing who can play off the ball and make an impact defensively” will be at the top of Los Angeles’ list. With so many expiring contracts to work with, the Lakers have the assets to chase an upgrade if the right player becomes available.

Andrew Wiggins Update Brings Bad News

One name the Lakers have consistently been tied to is Andrew Wiggins. Since being traded to the Miami Heat last season, Wiggins has been viewed as the type of defensive presence who could slot perfectly alongside James and Dončić.

However, Siegel noted that Miami isn’t in a rush to move him. “Right now, the Heat don’t hold much of a desire to trade Wiggins and are operating under the mindset of waiting to see how things play out during the first few months of the regular season, sources said,” he reported. The Heat are holding out for a steep return and view Wiggins as an important part of their long-term plans.

In Miami, Wiggins averaged 19 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 36% from deep. His defense continues to be his calling card, but the Heat’s valuation has made a deal difficult to strike.

Lakers’ Trade Market Outlook

If Wiggins stays off the table, the Lakers will likely explore other options closer to February. The front office has a track record of waiting out the market. They prefer to strike when prices fall. With James running out of time to chase another title, and Dončić firmly in his prime, the urgency is obvious.

The most probable scenario? Los Angeles treats the first half of the season as a testing ground. Then they use their expiring contracts to make a defensive upgrade at the deadline. Whether that ends up being Wiggins or another wing, the Lakers are unlikely to sit on their hands. If the right opportunity presents itself, they’ll move.
