While we’ll all have answers on the immediate future of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs in a few days, when his practice window closes after coming off injured reserve, there may be clues to the franchise’s long-term plans for him already there for all to see.
According to Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. on a recent episode of the DLLS Cowboys podcast, Diggs has likely already played his last game in a Cowboys uniform.
The Cowboys have until December 20 to either activate Diggs or put him back on injured reserve after opening up his 3-week practice window earlier this month after he suffered a mysterious injury at home in October.
“You know good and damn well he’s not playing, right?” Hill said on Wednesday, December 17. “What’s the point? What’s the point of playing him now? You don’t play him when the season’s on the line. What’s the point of playing him when then season’s not on the line? When everything is over … what’s the point? You might want to get the young guys more reps. He’s going to be gone in the offseason.”
For all intents and purposes, Diggs not playing at this point does project itself more as a coach’s decision than anything else as he’s publicly stated he’s healthy and ready to play. The story from Cowboys brass is much different.
“Diggs isn’t healthy enough to be out there for us, OK?” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on December 15. “Did everybody hear that? I said he’s not healthy enough for us to put him out there.”
Cowboys Have Microscopic Playoff Odds
The Cowboys seemingly had their playoff fate in their own hands following a flurry of trade deadline moves and 3 consecutive wins capped by a Week 13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
After consecutive losses to the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, the Cowboys saw their playoff odds drop to just 1 percent, according to the NFL.com. Even if they defeat the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16, their odds go up to 2 percent.
Not having Diggs, one of the highest paid cornerbacks in the league, would usually be considered a setback. Watching him play this year tells us something much different.
According to Pro Football Focus, his 58.7 overall grade puts him in the lower half of players at his position in the 6 games he actually played in, and he hasn’t been on the field since a Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers on October 12.
Top 10 Worst Cowboys Contracts of All Time
The truth about Diggs is the 5-year, $97 million contract extension he signed before the 2023 season has come to define his career and is probably one of the worst contracts in franchise history.
Since signing his mega-deal, Diggs will have missed 32 games at the end of the 2025 regular season barring some kind of roster addition miracle … although he did practice on December 17.
“Multiple sources tell me the relationship between Diggs and the organization has ‘soured’ and ‘been severed.’ ” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on X.”Diggs, who last played Week 6 and has already been activated from IR, told reporters this week that he was ‘ready.’ “
