Insider: No Teams Interested in Trading for Penguins Goalie

The Pittsburgh Penguins are open to trading goalie Tristan Jarry, but aren’t getting much trade interest in him.

The Penguins acquired Arturs Silovs this offseason to pair alongside Joel Blomqvist as their starting goalies. However, Pittsburgh still has Jarry under contract, but Penguins insider Josh Yohe says no teams have been interested in trading for him.

“I’d still say there’s a 75-80% chance he’s on this team on opening night; they’re certainly willing to move him; I haven’t heard of any teams being interested,” Yohe said on The Athletic Hockey Show.

Jarry struggled last season and was ultimately sent down to the AHL. But he did come back up and had more success. However, that still wasn’t enough to make more NHL teams interested in him.

Jarry finished the year going 16-12-6 with a 3.12 GAA and a .893 SV%. It was a major step down from 2019-20 when he had a .920 SV% and even 2022 and 2023 when he had a .919 SV% and a .909 SV%, respectively.

The 30-year-old is entering the third year of his five-year, $26.88 million deal with the Penguins.

Penguins GM Has Confidence Jarry Will Rebound

In his NHL career, Jarry has proven he can be a true No. 1 goalie in the NHL.

However, last season, Jarry struggled mightily and was placed on waivers, and all 31 other teams didn’t claim him. Yet, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas believes it was a good learning experience for him and expects Jarry will be much better this upcoming season.

“Especially this year, it couldn’t have been easy on him to start with us, go down to (Wilkes-Barre) once, come back up, (then) back down to Wilkes full time before coming back again to Pittsburgh. Especially as a guy that’s been a two-time All-Star in the league (it wasn’t easy),” said Dubas on the 100% Hockey podcast. “And I think he’s handled it very well in terms of how he’s played this time back. So, we hope he can have a strong finish to the year and that can propel him into a great summer and a great start to next season.”

Jarry was an NHL All-Star in 2020 and 2022. He was selected in the second round of the 2013 NHL Draft.

What Teams Should Have Interest in Jarry?

Although Yohe says no teams have interest in Jarry, the Edmonton Oilers are a logical team many would think should be interested in him.

Edmonton has Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard both under contract for next season, but the Oilers could look to upgrade.

Acquiring Jarry would be a high-risk, high-reward move for Edmonton. If he returns to form, he’d be a true No. 1 goalie. But if he has another year like last year, it wouldn’t be much of an upgrade.

Edmonton would also need the Penguins to retain some salary on him. But the Oilers would be a logical team to acquire Jarry if he is traded.

Penguins GM Needed to Address Goaltending

Dubas says Pittsburgh needed to get better in the net, whether that was Jarry improving or making moves.

“We also conceded a lot defensively in terms of what was expected to be given up. But we also allowed more than expected, so that’s a really poor combination. Both need to be rectified,” Dubas said.

Pittsburgh traded away Alex Nedeljkovic and acquired Silovs from the Canucks to bolster the position. But if Jarry returns to form, he would be the Penguins’ starting goalie.
