The Chicago Bulls and Josh Giddey are yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, negotiations between the two camps have enjoyed a “good dialogue.” However, Giddey and his representatives are still seeking a deal in the $30 million per year range.
“Bulls and Josh Giddey are having good dialogue, per a source, but the Giddey camp is dug in on the Suggs contract – $30 million per. Let the posturing continue,” Cowley reported via X.
Giddey is arguably a better player than Jalen Suggs. It’s fair for Giddey to want a similar payday, especially as he projects to be the cornerstone of Chicago’s rebuilding process. Nonetheless, the Bulls are being wise in resisting overpaying the playmaking guard. There currently appears to be minimal interest in Giddey from elsewhere in the league. Therefore, he doesn’t hold too much power within negotiations.
Nevertheless, the Bulls will know they can’t afford to lose Giddey. Having him sign his qualifying offer would be a disaster. That would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The best thing Chicago can do is sign him to a new deal this summer. However, both parties must be willing to compromise if they’re going to get a contract over the finish line.
Giddey and Bulls Remain Apart in Negotiations
During a recent free agency breakdown, ESPN’s Bobby Marks provided some insight into the current situation between the Bulls and Giddey.
“Josh Giddey, I’m going to say, I said this on SportsCenter, in the last 10 years, we’ve had five players sign qualifying offers. And what the qualifying offer does is it’s a one-year contract, and then you become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Because it’s a one-year contract, you have full authority on any trade. So you have veto power on trades. The problem is that if you approve a trade and you are traded to that team, you will lose your bird rights…I made a joke during our production meeting, that they’re about the Gulf of Mexico apart.”
Fortunately for the Bulls, we’re still in the early stages of the offseason. There’s plenty of time to find a middle ground with Giddey’s camp and get a contract finalized. Still, for every day that negotiations drag on, the Bulls’ front office risks alienating its star guard.
Giddey clearly believes he’s worth a hefty pay increase, and the more Chicago drags its heels, the more it’s telling him they’re not aligned with his overall value. That’s a dangerous game to play.
Bulls Operating From a Position of Strength
During a recent episode of “The Chicago Lead,” Bulls insider K.C. Johnson explained how the franchise is operating from a position of strength.
“The Bulls have been able to talk with his representatives, as they did last fall when there was a rookie contract extension in play,” Johnson said. “And no deal. So this supports what I’ve been reporting, that the Bulls are negotiating from a position of strength. That’s not to say they don’t want Josh Giddey back. That’s not to say they traded Alex Caruso for a guy they’re going to let walk. What it is to say is they have learned from the Patrick Williams situation, where they very proactively outbid the competition.”
Sooner or later, either the Bulls or Giddey will need to change their expectations. Both parties will understand they’re each other’s best chances of success. Fortunately for Chicago, if other team’s aren’t making contract offers, Giddey may realize that his current asking price is unrealistic. Maybe then a new contract can finally be wrapped up.
