Insider Provides Update On Rasmus Andersson’s Future With Flames

The Calgary Flames have a big question mark looming over their blue line as they enter the 2025-26 season. Their number one defenseman Rasmus Andersson is still with the club, with no extension or trade in sight. There was a belief that he would be dealt before the start of the season. But now, you wonder if the opposite is true. Will he sign a long-term extension with the Flames and remain with the team?

Well, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, that could be the case. He was on TSN’s Insider Trading and suggested that the “door is not closed” on an extension with the organization. Which is great news, especially after the Flames recently signed Dustin Wolf to a long-term extension and could have another big piece of their organization locked up.

Rasmus Andersson Could Sign Extension With Flames

LeBrun shared that it had always been a matter of if and not when Rasmus Andersson would be traded. However, now with the door still being open for an extension, a trade could never happen.

LeBrun explains:

“Neither side wants to totally close the door on maybe having extension talks again at some point this year. But for now, what the team has told Andersson is, ‘Hey, let’s start the year and see how things go here and then maybe we’ll revisit this at some point.’”

He also shared that there was a deal that almost happened with Andersson and the Vegas Golden Knights. But it fell through. Nevertheless, it points to just how serious the Flames were about trading him. With both sides agreeing to start the year and see how things go. It could mean that Andersson has the potential to be a member of the Flames for the entirety of his career. However, it also could mean that he could end up being dealt by Christmas if things don’t go as planned and the club struggles.

Should the Flames Sign Andersson Long-Term?

This is the biggest question that remains if the two sides do try and work out an extension. Should the Flames sign Andersson long-term? Well, LeBrun also had some insight on that.

“I do think Andersson would listen if there was an eight-year offer on the table,” said LeBrun, “but right now, I just don’t think the team is ready to go there.”

If the team isn’t ready to go there, it’s likely because they see him as a piece to the puzzle, but not a long-term fit with what they are planning. The Flames are in an interesting spot. They are stuck between a re-tool and a rebuild, and eventually if things keep being stuck in no-man’s land, they will need to pick a direction. If that direction is re-tool, then signing Andersson to a long-term deal makes sense. But, if it’s a rebuild, then it doesn’t.

The good news is, if the two sides agree on an extension and by next season the team decides to pivot. Then they can still trade Andersson and get a decent return.
