Insider Questions Shedeur Sanders’ Desire to Play for Browns

Shedeur Sanders had hopes of being a first-round pick, but he fell to the fifth round when the Cleveland Browns selected him.

Sanders started the year as the third-string quarterback, and after Joe Flacco was traded, he became the backup. Yet, he has yet to see the field, and now Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland wondered if Sanders wants to even play for the Browns.

“What is starting to become a mystery to me is how could he have three different injuries without even taking No. 1 reps? Tired arm, shoulder, and now a back,” Grossi said on ESPN Cleveland. “I’m wondering, does he want to play?”

It’s a fair point from Grossi, as he wonders if Sanders even wants to play for the Browns. If that is indeed the case, Cleveland should look to move him this offseason.

Tony Rizzo, who was hosting the show, also agreed with Grossi as he wondered how legitimate the injuries are.

“Either these are made-up injuries or somebody doesn’t want him to play or he doesn’t want to play,” Rizzo added.

Sanders did return to practice this week, but his status for Week 10 is up in the air.

Insider: ‘Something is Going on’ With Sanders

With Sanders still not getting any first-team reps or a chance to play in the game, Rizzo wants to know what is going on with the rookie quarterback.

Rizzo believes something is going on with Sanders in Cleveland, but he isn’t sure what it is.

“Why hasn’t Shedeur Sanders gotten onto the field? I want everyone’s opinion on this,” Rizzo said. “I, for the life of me, cannot figure out what is going on. Something’s going on. Something is going on, I don’t know what, I’m not privy to it, If I knew, I would tell you. … I’m hearing a bunch of stuff I don’t want to believe. I honestly don’t know what is going on.”

Rizzo believes the Browns’ handling of Sanders has been weird, and he would like some answers on it. But for now, Sanders will remain the backup quarterback for Cleveland with Dillon Gabriell as the starting quarterback.

Sanders Returns to Practice for Browns

Sanders was inactive in Week 8 due to a back injury and spent the bye week rehabbing the injury.

However, to begin the week, he missed practice on Monday, but on Wednesday, he did return to practice, leaving the door open for him to be the backup on Sunday.

“He’ll be limited today. Need to see how he responds,” Stefanski said on Wednesday. “Obviously, he’s pushing very hard in rehab but need to see how he does over the next couple days.”

Even if Sanders is healthy, Gabriel will remain the starting quarterback, and he’s eager to have Tommy Rees call plays on Sunday.

“He’s eager, he’s hungry, he’s got a lot of knowledge,” Gabriel said. “I’ve been a fan even from back in college and seeing what he’s been able to do, but I think he just utilizes players at a high level. But I think with everyone, it’s all coming together. You know, it’s never one person. Definitely there could be times of inspiration and help in that way, but it’s all of us coming together to help each other out and coach is good leader for that.”

The Browns will go on the road to play the New York Jets on Sunday.
