Insider: Red Wings & Canucks Had Trade Talks About Superstar

The Detroit Red Wings are having a solid start to the 2025-26 season. They currently have a 15-11-3 record and are fourth in the Atlantic Division. They are also only one point behind the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division, so they are certainly in a good place.

The Red Wings have run into some struggles as of late, however. The Red Wings have won only four out of their last 10 games, which is not ideal when noting that the Eastern Conference is incredibly close right now. However, the Red Wings also defeated the Seattle Kraken in their last game, so they will be looking to build on that front here.

Now, with the Red Wings having a real shot of breaking their nine-year playoff drought this season, they are eyeing one of the NHL’s best defensemen – Vancouver Canucks superstar Quinn Hughes.

Red Wings Have Talked With Canucks About Quinn Hughes

During the most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast for Sportsnet, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Red Wings have talked with the Canucks about Hughes.

“I did a podcast episode last week where I talked about Detroit, and I do believe if Vancouver and Detroit wanted to make a deal, I do believe there is a deal to be made there,” Friedman said. “And I also think they’ve talked.”

Hearing that the Red Wings have expressed interest in Hughes is not surprising in the slightest. The Red Wings are an exciting team on the rise looking to take that next step, and landing a superstar like Hughes would help things on that front tremendously.

At 26 years old, Hughes is right in his prime and would fit perfectly on the Red Wings’ roster because of it. He also certainly knows the state of Michigan well, as he spent two seasons with the University of Michigan before starting his NHL career.

Red Wings Are Not the Only Team That Has Expressed Interest in Hughes

The Red Wings are not the only team that has expressed interest in Hughes, though. During Dec. 6’s edition of Saturday Headlines, Friedman reported that the New Jersey Devils have also talked with the Canucks about Hughes.

“You always ask, who’s busy? What teams are active this week? And this week, the No. 1 answer was the Devils,” Friedman said. “Once Vancouver announced they were open for business, I do believe there was a conversation, at least one, between the Devils and the Canucks about Quinn Hughes. I stress, I do not believe that anything is imminent. I don’t even know if they are anywhere far along, but I do believe that conversation was had about where things stand and about where they might be going.”

The Devils certainly have a real case to acquire Quinn, as his brothers, Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes, play for them. The Devils also have some quality trade assets to work with, so they have the potential to be tough competition for the Red Wings in the Hughes sweepstakes.
