The New York Jets won’t be trading Breece Hall ahead of the 2025 season.
Head coach Aaron Glenn told Hall that directly over the phone when trade rumors started to swirl ahead of the 2025 NFL draft. However, Glenn didn’t tell Hall that he would never trade him.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed the doomsday scenario that could lead to a Hall trade mid-season.
“Hall’s name surfaced in trade rumors around the draft. It got so loud that Glenn called Hall to put his mind at ease. According to Hall, Glenn told him, ‘I don’t want to trade you. I want you to be here. You’re going to be our running back.’
The Jets want to be a run-oriented offense, so it wouldn’t have made sense to trade their most accomplished back. It could be a different story around the mid-season trading deadline. If they fall out of contention, Hall will be a prime candidate to be dealt. We already know how much Glenn likes [Braelon] Allen and [Isaiah] Davis,” Cimini explained.
The Jets Don’t Want to Potentially Lose a Player for Nothing
This offseason, the Jets lost starting cornerback D.J. Reed in free agency. He signed the largest contract of any ex-Jet this offseason, a three-year, $48 million deal with the Detroit Lions.
Many fans expected the Jets to get a compensatory pick for that move. It didn’t happen.
According to Over The Cap, Reed’s signing with the Lions was canceled out by the Jets’ signing of quarterback Justin Fields.
The NFL issues comp picks on a year-to-year basis based on a very complicated formula that is essentially determined by comparing the free agents you signed versus the free agents you lost. You can learn more about that here.
In Layman’s terms, it is ultimately an inexact science.
In the middle of the 2024 season, the Jets had a chance to deal Reed at the NFL’s trade deadline.
NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed on November 5 that the Washington Commanders “called several teams looking for a top corner.”
The Jets were on their shortlist, and they “reached out to the Jets about DJ Reed, but were told by the Jets he wasn’t available.”

After being rejected by the Jets, the Commanders pivoted to the New Orleans Saints. Ahead of the trade deadline, the Commanders and Saints struck a deal for Marshon Lattimore.
Saints received: a 2025 third rounder, a 2025 fourth rounder, and a 2025 sixth rounder
Commanders received: Lattimore and a 2025 fifth-round pick
The Jets could have received a combo of picks for Reed, but instead, they got nothing.
Jets Don’t Want to Repeat a Mistake From the Past
Who knows what the Jets would have exactly received if they had decided to trade Reed away? However, they would have gotten something, and they ended up with nothing.
Trading Hall right now wouldn’t make sense. The Jets have stated publicly that they believe they can win right now. Hall being on the roster improves those odds.
If we fast-forward a few months and the Jets are out of contention at the deadline, they might do things differently this time around.
Hall is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025. If the Jets fall out of it, they may consider flipping Hall to a contender and getting a pick or picks.
If the Jets are at .500 or have a winning record by the trade deadline, they will likely hold onto Hall to improve their chances of making the playoffs. It will be something to watch over the coming months.
