It seems like the Cincinnati Bengals fans can finally take a sigh of relief knowing that trade notification they have been dreading will not be coming any time soon. With the Cats finally getting back in the win column, the franchise can pump the brakes on the fire-sale trade talks ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
NFL insider Diana Russini posted an article today on The Athletic that headlined what she is hearing from her sources across the league. The reporter, who’s consistently spot on, had this to say from the Bengals’ locker room.
“Bengals All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson is drawing attention around the league, with the 49ers showing the most interest,” Russini reports. “Cincinnati isn’t shopping him, and after the Bengals’ Thursday night win, most do not expect him to get moved.”
The Bengals are walking a tight rope right now. Their decision to trade for quarterback Joe Flacco seemingly conveyed a commitment to win now. So moving the All-Pro defender would be quite contradictory.
However, after only managing to get a one year contract extension done over the offseason, the writing was on the wall that a Trey Hendrickson trade could be on the horizon.
With the 0-7
New York Jets coming up and a winnable game against the Chicago Bears following suit, the Bengals are in a position to be above by .500 before their Week 10 bye. This would make selling by the November 4th deadline highly unlikely.
What It Would Take To Move Trey Hendrickson
On top of the optics hit it would be if the Bengals moved their second best player, a new report reveals that Cincinnati has placed a hefty price tag on his head.
“(Hendrickson) could be one that would be interesting to look at,” SI insider Albert Breer said when discussion Hendrickson as a potential Colts trade piece. “The Colts made a play for Hendrickson in the summer. The Bengals asked for a lot.”
As it turns out, a lot was an under statement. The Bengals reportedly wanted not only a first round pick, as well as 39 million dollar defensive tackle Grover Stewart.
Finding a team that is willing to part ways with a fringe Pro Bowl level player as well as a first round selection at this stage in the game may be too much to ask for.
Additionally, any team interested in acquiring Hendrickson understands that they will be on the hook for extending him. With his asking price likely nearing the $40 million mark, there is only a handful of teams that could realistically make that happen.
I say that to say this, the pool of interest from teams around the league that was already limited due to the pending contract extension has been further minimized by Cincinnati’s trade demands. Which might not be bad news for Bengals fans who like watching edge rushers get 20 sacks a year.
