The Kansas City Chiefs tried to bring in help for their backfield at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline but fell flat, getting rejected in their bid for New York Jets running back Breece Hall.
SNY reporter Connor Hughes revealed that the Chiefs made a strong offer to the Jets, who spent the day shedding players and accumulating high draft picks. The Jets reportedly had a price in mind for their versatile running back and the Chiefs came close, but failed to raise their offer enough to land Hall.
Chiefs Wouldn’t Give Day 2 Draft Pick
Hughes reported that the Jets were more than willing to trade Hall on Tuesday, having already shipped away star cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive lineman Quinnen Williams in deals that netted them three first-round picks in total.
Hughes reported that the Jets also wanted a Day 2 draft pick for Hall, but the Chiefs came in just below the offer and the Jets weren’t willing to haggle over the price.
“With Breece Hall, there was an offer on the table for a fourth-round pick for Breece Hall,” Hughes said. “I was told it was from the Kansas City Chiefs that were willing to trade for Breece Hall. The Jets were steadfast in wanting a third.”
The 24-year-old Hall is in the final season of his $9 million rookie contract, with his future in New York uncertain. The Jets drafted running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis in 2024, adding a pair of young and cost-controlled rushers to build around.
The Chiefs were in need of help in the backfield, with top running back Isiah Pacheco out with an injury and veteran Kareem Hunt not offering much support. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been one of the most effective rushers for the Chiefs both in terms of rushing yards and touchdowns, not an ideal situation for the long-term health of their star quarterback.
After losing out on Hall at the trade deadline, the Chiefs could find some help by giving a larger role to rookie running back Brashard Smith. The seventh-round pick has seen his workload increase after Pacheco’s injury, though he is still struggling to bring consistent production. Smith has 28 carries for 82 yards, adding 14 receptions for 122 yards.
Though the Chiefs are not in desperation mode yet, Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills put them in a challenging spot. They now sit two full games behind the Denver Broncos for the lead in the AFC West and are currently out of the playoff spot, sitting at No. 8 in the AFC.
Chiefs Had a Quiet Trade Deadline
The Chiefs ended up standing pat at the trade deadline, making no moves despite hints from chairman and CEO Clark Hunt that the team would look for defensive line help after second-round pick Omarr Norman-Lott suffered a season-ending knee injury.
“Brett Veach has historically been pretty aggressive at the trade deadline,” Hunt said, via SI.com. “If he feels like we have a need, he’s not shy about addressing it. And I think that’ll be true again this year. Obviously, an important part of it is where you stand from an injury standpoint.
“We’ve been pretty fortunate up to this point. We were sad to lose (Omarr) Norman-Lott last week, and that definitely hurt us on the defensive line.”
