Winning the U.S. Open was worth the wait for J.J. Spaun, and not just because of the 90-minute weather delay on the tournamentâs final day.
Spaunâs day had already been long enough.
When speaking to reporters at Oakmont Country Club, where he birdied the final two holes to finish 1-under par for his first major championship, the 34-year-old father of two revealed he took an unexpected 4 a.m. trip to CVS to care of his sick daughter.
âToday I was running to CVS in downtown because my daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night,â Spaun said. âI was just like, okay, my wife was up at 3 a.m., and sheâs like âViolet is vomiting all over. She canât keep anything down.ââ
J.J. Spaun Rebounds After Rocky Start
Spaun entered Sunday tied for second with Adam Scott at 3-under, one shot behind leader Sam Burns. Yet, he proceeded to bogey five of his first six holes, including an unfortunate break on the par-4 2.
âIt was kind of a rough start to the morning,â Spaun said. âIâm not blaming that on my start, but it kind of fit the mold of what was going on, the chaos.â
Spaun fared much better on the back nine, keeping his composure after his early struggles to shoot 3-under. He closed the tournament in scintillating fashion, sinking a 64-foot putt on 18.
âIt definitely felt like a storybook fairytale ending, kind of underdog fighting back, not giving up, never quitting,â Spaun said. âWith the rain and everything and then the putt, I mean, you couldnât write a better story.â
J.J. Spaun Had One Prior PGA Tour Win
Spaunâs only previous PGA Tour win came at the 2022 Valero Texas Open, where he outlasted Matt Jones and Matt Kuchar by two strokes. His best finish in a major was a tie for 23rd at the Masters that same year. Heâd missed the cut in his only previous appearance at the U.S. Open, in 2021.
Spaunâs also had 43 top-10 finishes, including sixth at the Charles Schwab Challenge last month, but missed the cut at the Memorial.
âIâve always kind of battled through whatever it may be to kind of get to where I needed to be and get to what I wanted,â Spaun said. âIâve done this before. Iâve had slumps kind of at every level.
âIâve always kind of, I went back and said, âYouâve done this before. Youâve been down before. You got out of it.ââ
