The Jaguars acquired Saunders from the New Orleans Saints on August 17 for center Luke Fortner, right after their preseason game against each other.
Saunders gives the Jaguars’ “much-needed depth” at nose tackle, according to Sports Illustrated’s Andy Quach.
“But it’s also a testament to the improvements they made along the offensive line, which rendered Luke Fortner an expendable piece in Jacksonville,” Quach wrote on August 20.
Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 324 pounds, Saunders has the kind of build that makes him a mismatch problem before the ball is even snapped. His compact frame and low center of gravity give him natural leverage against taller offensive linemen.
At the same time, his surprising agility allows him to play beyond the stereotypes often attached to nose tackles.
