Jakobi Meyers Gets Blunt Take on Raiders Contract Extension

As the NFL regular season approaches, the Las Vegas Raiders have yet to settle matters with starting wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. After failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension, Meyers has requested a trade from the team.

The Raiders appear firm on keeping Meyers, though trade talks still hover over the team. Moreover, The Athletic’s Tashan Reed doesn’t see the Silver and Black having in-season contract extension talks with Meyers to secure him for the foreseeable future.

“I would be pretty surprised [if the Raiders extend Meyers], just because when you draft somebody like [Jack] Bech, who basically has the same skills as Jakobi Meyers, it doesn’t really make sense,” Reed said on “Foxboro Rush.”

“It’d be one thing if Bech was a fourth-round pick, fifth-round pick, but a second-round pick—you expect that guy to be a starter, and you expect it to be a starter soon.

“Now, that’s the case. It just doesn’t really make sense to have him and Jakobi Meyers around. I would be pretty surprised if they extend Meyers at this point, just because it doesn’t seem to add up with their moves in the offseason.”

Will Jakobi Meyers Force a Trade From Raiders?

A wide receiver wanting out isn’t new for Las Vegas, as they had to deal with Davante Adams’ demanding a trade request last season. Eventually, the Raiders would trade Adams, who dealt with a hamstring injury before finally getting his move out of the Silver and Black.

Nonetheless, Reed doesn’t expect Meyers to stand firm with his trade request and sit out games until he gets his move.

“He’s not a guy that’s going to fake an injury or not give full effort,” Reed added. “I know that the Raiders fans were probably a little bit scorned from last year with Davante Adams. When he requested his trade, he was out with a hamstring injury and didn’t play, and then he got traded to the New York Jets, and suddenly, he was out there again.

“So Jakobi isn’t going to go that route. He’s going to still be out there, still practicing, still giving it his good, still playing on Sundays. He said that the main reason why he’s doing it instead of holding out is just loyalty to his teammates. He’s been here for a few years; he’s close with a lot of the guys in the locker room. He’s one of the more respected players in the locker room, and so he’s going to give full effort. He’s not going to be happy.”

It will be interesting to see if the Raiders still have this stance on Meyers as the NFL trade deadline approaches. Should Las Vegas be in the playoff hunt, it’s unlikely that they trade the player.

Jakobi Meyers Broke His Silence on His Trade Request

On September 3, Meyers, who recorded 87 catches for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns with the Raiders last season, spoke to the media and revealed what unfolded between him and Las Vegas.

“I asked; they said no,” Meyers said (h/t Pro Football Talk).  “That’s where that stopped. I’m just going to keep doing my job until something shakes out either way. I don’t know which way it’s going to go, but I’ll be ready for whatever.”
