Things are going quite well for Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts. Last season, he led his squad to a dominant 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, and after a busy offseason, the Eagles seem well-positioned to go out and attempt to repeat as champions in 2025.
Despite his continued success under center, Hurts hasn’t won over all of his detractors just yet. That was clear as day when former NFL MVP Cam Newton revealed his list of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league heading into the new season, with Hurts being a shocking snub from the list.
Cam Newton Doesn’t Believe Jalen Hurts is a Top 10 Quarterback
Since taking over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2021, Hurts has been one of the most consistent players at his position in the league. He earned a pair of Pro Bowl selections in 2022 and 2023, while also earning a spot on the All-Pro Second Team in 2022 and Super Bowl LIX MVP honors for his dominant outing against the Chiefs the last time he was on the field.
And yet, in the eyes of some fans, Hurts’ play leaves a lot to be desired. While he did miss two games last season, he only threw for 2,903 yards, which isn’t exactly a gaudy total. Of course, it’s worth noting that you have to factor in Hurts’ capabilities as a rusher, as he racked up 630 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns.
The question that many folks wonder is whether Hurts is a product of Philadelphia’s talented roster or if he’s actually a good quarterback. Newton isn’t completely discrediting Hurts’ play under center, but he can’t look past how good the rest of the Eagles’ roster is, as he believes it’s a big reason why the former Oklahoma Sooners’ star has been so successful in recent seasons.
“Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we’re talking about what they bring to the table, it’s hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you’re throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game,” Newton said on his “4th&1” podcast.
“Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win. He has to play good—but he doesn’t have to play elite. We’re not asking you to win the game, we’re just asking you not to lose it.”
Jalen Hurts Has More to Prove in 2025 with Eagles

Even with his aforementioned Super Bowl victory, Hurts still has something to prove in the public eye. Of course, he won’t be too concerned with how people view his individual play, so long as the team continues to win games, and they appear to be in a great spot to keep dominating when they return to action in 2025.
Given all that he’s accomplished as of late, it’s tough to say that Hurts isn’t one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Newton disagrees, though, so it will be on Hurts to lead the Eagles on another deep playoff run in 2025 in order to change the narrative once and for all.
