Jamie Carragher believes Matheus Cunha is ‘perfect’ for Manchester United – but his arrival could force another player to leave Old Trafford.

It was reported on Monday that Cunha has agreed to join United this summer, with Ruben Amorim ready to trigger his £62.5million release clause.

The transfer is something of a coup for the Red Devils, with the Wolves star also heavily linked with rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

With 15 goals and six assists in the Premier League this season, Amorim will be hoping the attacking midfielder can solve United’s scoring issues and Carragher believes he will.

‘I think it’s a great signing and I think he’s a brilliant player. I love watching him play,’ the Liverpool legend told Sky Sports.

‘He was in my team of the season at the halfway point, he had a great start to the season. I watched him at Man City a few weeks ago and he looked really sharp, quick.

‘We know how the manager at Manchester United wants to play with two No.10s in his team. I think he’d fit perfectly.’

However, Carragher went onto add that Cunha’s arrival might spell the end for current United star Alejandro Garnacho who has at times looked out of place in Amorim’s system.

Fans and pundits seem divided on the 20-year-old winger who has 11 goals and 10 assists in 54 games across all competitions and attracted strong interest from Chelsea and Napoli.

Asked how Cunha’s transfer might affect Garnacho’s future at the club, Carragher replied: ‘It’s certainly not good news because I think Amad Diallo might play one of those other positions alongside Cunha, maybe Bruno Fernandes at different times.

‘There is a lot of talk about Garnacho moving on because he’s come through the academy system and we know what that means for the PSR [Profit and Sustainability Rules].

‘We also know Man United have got a few problems with that issue right now. I think if a decent offer comes in for Garnacho, Man United will probably take it.’

Amid the transfer interest, United have slapped a £65m price tag on the Argentina international and due to his status as an academy graduate they will bank all of the money from a sale.

The Red Devils are desperately looking to raise cash in order to fund Amorim’s rebuild, with on loan forwards Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho all expected to be sold too.

Their financial situation will be greatly improved however if they beat Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday and qualify for the Champions League.
