Jamie Redknapp tells Ruben Amorim to sell key Manchester United star

Jamie Redknapp has surprisingly urged Ruben Amorim to sell Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes this summer.

Fernandes has enjoyed another influential season at Old Trafford despite United’s dismal form under Amorim and Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United finished just 15th in the Premier League – closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places – and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.

Amorim is keen to bring in some of his own signings this summer but that will likely require some sales as United have handed the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss a transfer kitty of just £100m.

Given Manchester United intend to activate Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m release clause, it is doubtful how far £100m will go unless there are substantial sales.

Amorim has already told Alejandro Garnacho he can leave the club, with the Argentina international valued at around £50m and attracting interest from the likes of Chelsea and Napoli.

But ex-England midfielder Redknapp is of the opinion that Manchester United should also sell Fernandes, the club’s stand-out player over the past five years.

Redknapp in fact thinks Leny Yoro is the only player United cannot afford to lose during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the final Premier League games of the season, Redknapp said: ‘It tells you everything when you look and go through that squad and think to yourself, how many of them would you not sell this summer?

‘I think apart from Leny Yoro, purely because he hasn’t been there long and he’s a young player, I think every single United player will be up for sale.’

Asked whether that included Fernandes, Redknapp added: ‘I would right now yeah and I’m a big fan.

‘I think he’s a game-changer but I think if the right money came about and you could then invest into the squad and I think he is a good player, I think he’s a top footballer.

‘He was poor in midweek, but he has been their leading light this year but if the right money were to come available and you can improve your squad.

‘I would certainly take it.’

Fernandes sparked speculation he could leave Manchester United following the club’s deflating Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

‘I will be here until the club tells me it is time to leave,’ Fernandes said. ‘I am available to make the club have great days again.

‘The day the club thinks I am too much, or it is time to leave, football is like that and you never know.

‘If the club thinks it is time to leave, because they want to make some money, that is what it is and football is like that sometimes.’

Fernandes is the subject of interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who are reportedly willing to offer the player a deal worth £200m over three years.

The 30-year-old is yet to make a final decision on his future but is believed to have been urged to stay by multiple Manchester United teammates.
