Following their respective Wimbledon titles, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek took center stage at the Wimbledon Champions Dinner.
While some past champions have opted not to take the stage for the ceremonial dance, Sinner and Swiatek kept the tradition alive following their big wins at SW19.
On Monday, while speaking with BBC Sport, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner dished on the evening, revealing that he and Swiatek were initially told they didn’t have to dance.
“We were there and in the beginning they told us that we don’t have to do it because it was quite late. Then Iga told me, ‘No, no.. let’s do it.’ I was like, okay, it’s tradition, so it’s good to make that happen. It was nice to share this moment now with Iga and it’s a beautiful moment.”
The clip of the two sharing a dance has since gone viral, and considering Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova upheld the tradition after their respective 2024 Wimbledon wins, it sounds like the pressure will now be on next year’s winners to keep it going.
Sinner Jokes About Victory-Drinks Following Wimbledon Win
After Jannik Sinner’s big win on Centre Court on Sunday, the world No. 1 was asked by Annabel Croft what it felt like to win his first Wimbledon title.
As Sinner explained, he was still processing the win, because where he came from, a moment like this wasn’t just a dream, it was a dream of a dream – something so unimaginable that it was hard to comprehend.
Later in the evening at the Champions Dinner, Sinner was asked if he had digested the win yet.
“Digested? I don’t know. We were drinking quite a lot. It’s very very special to have my family here and the whole team. It’s a very special evening and seeing also Iga here with the family and the whole team it’s amazing.”
Considering Sinner’s championship match against Alcaraz was momentarily paused when an unexpected champagne cork flew onto Centre Court, the world No. 1’s celebration seems perfectly in line with the traditions at SW19.
Sinner Reflects on Grigor Dimitrov’s Fourth-Round Injury
While Jannik Sinner was dialed in on all fronts during his Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 1 was nearly eliminated in the fourth round by Grigor Dimitrov.
After going down two sets, Sinner appeared to be on the brink of elimination before Dimitrov tore his pectoral muscle and was forced to retire from the match.,
During the Champions Dinner, Sinner was asked about the situation:
“I got lucky against Grigor. Things were turning out very difficult but it’s not the way you want to win a match. It’s all about at times to take the chance, and I took it, and then after at some point I really started to play well.”
You can see his comments at the one-minute mark of the video below.
Sinner will now head to Toronto for the ATP side of the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers at the end of the month, while Swiatek will head to Montreal for the WTA side of the Masters 1000 tournament.
