Today, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner will collide with Canadian standout Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
Sinner, who is competing in his first tournament since defeating two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon last month, has yet to drop a set in Cincinnati. In the second round, Sinner breadsticked Daniel Galan 6-1, 6-1 before then defeating Gabriel Diallo in the Round of 32.
Jannik Sinner, who is also the defending champion in Cincinnati, now heads into today’s match fresh off a win over Adrian Mannarino, who notably eliminated No. 13-seeded Tommy Paul in the Round of 32.
On the flip side, Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is eager to climb his way back into the top 20, enters today’s match having yet to lose a set in Cincinnati as well.
After a first-round bye, FAA defeated Tomas Etcheverry in the Round of 64, before then advancing to the Round of 16 after a walkover in the second set of his third-round match with Arthur Rinderknech, who retired in the second set down 4-2 after losing a tiebreak in the first.
FAA now heads into today’s match fresh off a 6-4, 6-3 win over Benjamin Bonzi in the Round of 16.
The winner of today’s match will advance to the semifinals, where they will collide with the winner of today’s Terence Atmane vs. Holger Rune match.
Sinner vs. Auger-Aliassime Head-to-Head
Despite the fact that Jannik Sinner is heading into today’s match as the defending champion in Cincinnati, the world No. 1 has never beaten Auger-Aliassime throughout his career.
The two first met in 2022 at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid. At the time, Sinner entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed, while on the flip side, Auger-Aliassime was seeded No. 8.
After eliminating Tommy Paul in the Round of 64, and Alex de Minaur in the Round of 32, Sinner then struggled against FAA in the Round of 16, losing 6-1, 6-2.
Later that summer, the two then met again in Cincinnati, where FAA was able to pick up a three-set win 2-6, 7-6, 6-1.
While speaking at the Tennis Channel desk on Wednesday, Jannik Sinner referenced his 0-2 head-to-head record against Auger-Aliassime, saying:
“I never won against Felix. We had a very tough match here, I had match point, I lost it, but it was a great match. He has huge huge potential, especially when he’s serving well. This is one surface that suits him very very well. It’s going to be very difficult but in the same time I’m looking forward for this match.
“I like these challenges, hopefully I can raise the level. Hopefully I can do it. If I want to play even with him I have to raise my level.”
