Jason Kidd’s Shocking Stance on Knicks Coaching Job Revealed

While the Dallas Mavericks reportedly turned down the New York Knicks‘ attempt to poach their head coach, Jason Kidd, there’s still a world in which the Hall of Famer can end up as New York’s next head coach.

According to NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson, Kidd views the Knicks’ opening as his “dream job” and could still “force his way out” of Dallas.

“From what I understand, from folks I have spoken to on Kidd’s side, in order to get out of Dallas, he’d have to force his way out,” Robinson told “The Zach Gelb Show” on June 24. “We’ve seen that before as well when he went from the Nets to Milwaukee. It would have to be a trade, and it would have to be beneficial to the Dallas Mavericks.”

“It is a dream job that Jason Kidd wants,” Robinson added. “But he’s got to find his way to New York. He wants that job.”

Mavericks Unwilling to Budge?

Shortly after Day 1 of the 2025 NBA Draft, which saw Dallas select Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick, Mavericks general manager addressed rumors of the Knicks still actively pursing Kidd, and whether his ownership was willing to entertain offers.

“Are there rumors? I thought I shut those down,” Harrison said, via Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News.

Flagg, who spent a lot of time with Kidd during his pre-Draft workout with the Mavericks, also addressed rumors of the head coach possibility leaving Dallas.

“I haven’t had those conversations yet at all,” Flagg said, via New York Post.

“But I think talking with Coach Kidd, my workout and even after I got picked, I was on the phone with him for a minute, I think he’s just excited. He has a good vision for me and what I can do and how I can impact the game. So I’m excited to just talk to him more.

Knicks Coaching Update

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks were recently granted permission to interview New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego.

Borrego becomes the fourth candidate the Knicks will be interviewing, following their meetings with former Kings head coach Mike Brown, former Kings head coach Taylor Jenkins and current Timberwolves lead assistant Micah Nori.

The Athletic’s James Edwards explained why the Knicks shortlisted Borrego as one of their candidates, nearly a month after dismissing Tom Thibodeau. Edwards also noted that Jenkins and Brown were joint front-runners for the high-profile job.

“Jenkins and Brown appear to be the front-runners as of now. However, New York has tossed around the idea of speaking with James Borrego for its vacancy, per league sources. Borrego, a CAA client, is known around the league for his offensive creativity and analytics-forward approach,” he wrote on June 23.

Borrego previously interviewed for the head coaching vacancies with the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Charlotte Hornets. In all three instances, he made the final shortlist but didn’t get the job.
