Jason Myers, Seahawks Receive Huge NFL News as They Chase Incredible History

The Seattle Seahawks received big NFL news on Wednesday, December 17, when kicker Jason Myers was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 15.

Myers earned the honor after a monster performance in Seattle’s 18-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts, when he converted all six of his field-goal attempts, capped by a 56-yard game-winning kick late in regulation.

NFL Honors Jason Myers After 6-Field Goal Takeover vs. Colts

The NFL’s weekly award nod followed a day where Myers was the Seahawks’ scoring offense.

He hit field goals from 47, 52, 46, 32, 30 and then 56 yards to finish the job, tying the most made field goals in a game by any kicker this season, per the NFL release.

Seattle’s own write-up noted the 56-yarder was the longest game-winning field goal in the final minutes of regulation in Seahawks history.

In other words: six chances, six makes, one walk-off.

Why This Award Feels Bigger Than “Just” a Weekly Honor

The timing matters because Myers isn’t only stacking accolades, he’s also building a legitimate case for a season that could land in the NFL record book.

Myers is on pace to break the NFL single-season record for made field goals, which is 44 (set by David Akers with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011). Myers has already made 37 field goals this season and is on pace to finish with 45, which would push him past Akers. On average he makes 2.6 field goals a game, which means he’d need to maintain that average in some fashion to break the record.

That’s where the “incredible history” angle comes in: with three games left on Seattle’s schedule (the Seahawks are 11-3), Myers is suddenly within range of a record that rarely even comes into play in modern seasons. Akers is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in part because of the history Myers is now challenging.

What It Means for Seattle Down the Stretch

For the Seahawks, having a kicker who can reliably cash in from distance changes late-game strategy. It expands what counts as “scoring territory,” impacts fourth-down decisions, and keeps pressure on opponents in low-scoring games. A huge field-goal pace can reflect red-zone issues, but it’s still a luxury to have a kicker Seattle trusts to keep converting.

On the season Myers has hit 37-42 field goals (88.1%). He’s 9-12 from 50 yards or longer, and 28-30 on anything shorter. He’s also been perfect on extra points this season (42).

And on Sunday, the trust paid off in the biggest moment, when Myers delivered the 56-yard game-winner to finish a win where Seattle didn’t score a touchdown.

Myers’ Award Comes With Star Company Around the NFC

Myers wasn’t the only player honored by the league in the NFC this week — and the other names underscore just how big a “Players of the Week” sweep can be.

Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after going 11 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns in Atlanta’s 29-28 win over Tampa Bay.

Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson took home NFC Defensive Player of the Week, highlighted by a stat-stuffing game against Cleveland that included an interception and a sack.
