Jazz Chisholm Jr. has brought the thunder to the New York Yankees lineup since coming off the injured list last month, and Chisholm will try to continue that power at the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby next week.
Chisholm was named the eighth-and-final participant in the upcoming event that will happen at Truist Park on Monday in Cobb County, Georgia.
The Yankees infielder is second on the team in home runs and has been on a power surge since returning from an oblique injury early in June. Chisholm has 12 home runs since June 3 and has with seven home runs in his past 50 at-bats over his past 13 games.
After a slow start to the season, Chisholm is second on the Yankees, behind only Aaron Judge, in OPS (.870) and home runs (17).
Who Are The Other Participants In The Home Run Derby?
Chisholm will bring a level of star power to the event, since he brings swagger to everything he goes. But aside from him and Atlanta Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., the Derby will be lacking many household names.
Only two of the top-10 home run hitters on the list will participate, but the Home Run Derby will have the leader.
Cal Raleigh, the catcher from the Seattle Mariners, is the biggest name in the event, since he leads the majors with 36 blasts, the most ever by a switch-hitter in the first half of the season.
Washington Nationals slugger James Wood is the other hitter in the top-10 in the majors. He has 24 home runs and sits in eighth place.
The other participants will be Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brent Rooker of the Athletics, Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins and Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Wood and Raleigh are the two real sluggers in the event and should be considered the favorites. Though, Acuna has 11 home runs in 143 at-bats as of July 10.
How Have Yankees Fared Previously In The Home Run Derby?
Chisholm is famously confident, but he has high standards to live up to as a Yankees representative in the event.
The most recent Yankees representative at the Home Run Derby won the contest, Aaron Judge, who became the fourth Yankees player to lift the award since it became an annual event in 1985.
Aside from Judge, Robinson Cano (2011), Jason Giambi (2002) and Tino Martinez (1997) also were victorious. Martinez’s victory came at what is now Progressive Field in Cleveland. Giambi won the award in Seattle, at T-Mobile Park, and Cano was victorious at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Cano was also the last Yankees player to participate and not win the event, when he did so in 2012 and 2013.
How Does Jazz Chisholm Jr. Feel About Participating In The Home Run Derby?
This is Chisholm’s second All-Star appearance but his first time in the Home Run Derby. He was asked by YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits about whether he’d want to swing at the Home Run Derby.
“I just like hitting home runs,” Chisholm said. “I just enjoy hitting home runs, and I wouldn’t mind doing [the Home Run Derby].”
