Jerry Jones Faces Serious Backlash After ‘Special’ Player Trade Comments

The Dallas Cowboys made what could perhaps go down as a franchise-altering decision when they moved off of three-time All-Pro edge rusher, Micah Parsons, immediately prior to the start of his contract year, in exchange for first round picks in 2026 and 2027, and Pro Bowl veteran nose tackle, Kenny Clark.

The expectation was – given that the Cowboys traded away an elite talent as he was striding into his prime – that this was a sign that Dallas was opting for adding additional building blocks for the future over retaining one generational star.

The two first rounders give Jerry Jones’ team ammunition to find multiple high quality players for the immediate future, and the cap space saved by not re-signing Parsons allows the Cowboys the ability to bring back other key players, like cornerback, DaRon Bland, and guard, Tyler Smith – both of whom received extensions in the aftermath of the former Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Cowboys GM Makes Unexpected Admission On Picks Acquired From The Packers

However, speaking on Monday, after Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears, Jones surprised many when he suggested that the team could reverse course and instead look to give up the multiple picks acquired from Green Bay in exchange for a top-level, impactful player, if one becomes available.

“If I had the opportunity to really do some good with those picks, I would do it.” Jones said on Monday. “We’ve got them and that’s one of the advantages to making the trade. You’ve got to have something that comes your way that’s really special, and if you’ve got the currency to do it, which in this case would be draft picks, we’ll do it.”

Although the long-time Cowboys owner and general manager did admit that they would not just splash on anyone, and that the right opportunity for such a move would need to present itself.

Jerry Jones Ripped After Suggesting Trading Picks For ‘Really Special’ Player

The irony of Jones’ comments were not lost on both the public and the media, who pointed out that the team already gave up a “really special” player – indeed perhaps the most special talent in the NFL, and at the most important non-QB position in the sport – defensive end, in Micah Parsons.

“Incredible bit here”, ESPN’s Mina Kimes wrote in response to Jones comments.

Other commenters also piled on, expressing how trading away the former Penn State star for picks, only to potentially use those picks on another star – and given that there may be no greater non-QB talents; especially ones aged just 26; in the NFL – this is seems like Jones could just end up trading away one player in exchange for a less good, less valuable other one.

To trade Parsons is certainly controversial, without question – but if Dallas can make good use out of the Packers’ picks and bring in two high quality, first round starters; or multiply those picks in moving down and across the draft board, then many will argue the team was smart to make the trade.

But to then package the picks just to trade for another, probably slightly worse player, all the while missing out Parsons’ play this current season, makes very little sense indeed.
