New York Jets training camp has finally arrived.
On Saturday, July 19, the rookies reported to the team. Now on Tuesday, July 22, the veterans will report, and we’ll officially be off to the races.
Before we get there, here is a full 53-man roster prediction from our expert, Paul ‘Boy Green’ Esden Jr.
Jets Offense Roster Prediction
Quarterbacks (two): Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor
If the Jets had drafted a quarterback in April, three would have made it to the 53-man roster. However, Fields is clearly QB1 and Taylor is clearly QB2. The battle to watch is who will be the QB3 on the practice squad between Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez.
Running backs (five): Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Donovan Edwards, and Kene Nwangwu
The Jets would be keeping four running backs for this exercise. Nwangwu is listed at running back, but he is going to be used as the primary return man on kickoffs. My prediction is that Edwards is going to force the Jets to keep an RB4 based on how he looks in training camp.
Fullback (one): Andrew Beck
The Jets are going to run the ball a lot. There is a reason a fullback was even on the 91-man roster; the Jets have a vision for him and how they plan to utilize him.
Wide receivers (seven): Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds, Tyler Johnson, Arian Smith, Malachi Corley, and Jamaal Pritchett
One of the big swaps is Xavier Gipson for Jamaal Pritchett. This is a swap of return men and an occasional wide receiver on the depth chart. The Gipson story has sort of run its course; it’s time for change.
Tight ends (three): Mason Taylor, Jeremy Ruckert, and Stone Smartt
There is a world where the Jets keep four tight ends, but I didn’t find a fourth one I felt good about, so I settled on these three, who I think are all roster locks. The Jets are going to be running a ton of multiple-tight-end sets.
Offensive line (nine): Olu Fashanu, John Simpson, Joe Tippmann, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Armand Membou, Chukwuma Okorafor, Josh Myers, Kohl Levao, and Carter Warren
I think the top seven of this group are roster locks. The five starters and the top two depth options at offensive tackle (Okorafor) and on the interior (Myers). After that, we’re off to the races to duke it out in the trenches.
Levao has positional flexibility, can play all five, and Warren has experience at offensive tackle, which is important.
Leander Wiegand, the Jets’ international pathway program player, gets a roster exemption if he is on the practice squad. Typically, NFL teams can only carry 16 players on the practice squad, but the Jets and any other team with an international pathway program player get an exemption to have a 17th player. He is a lock for that role.
The two toughest roster cuts in this group were Xavier Newman and Max Mitchell. They will have a chance to change their destiny in training camp.
Jets Defense Roster Prediction
Defensive tackles (four): Quinnen Williams, Byron Cowart, Derrick Nnadi, and Leonard Taylor III
I think this positional group is going to have a nice balance of veterans and youth. The toughest cuts for me were: Phidarian Mathis, Fatorma Mulbah, and Payton Page.
Mathis is talented, a former top-50 pick of the Washington Commanders, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. If he can, watch out.
Mulbah and Page are talented undrafted free agents who will have opportunities to make noise in camp and in the preseason.
Defensive ends (six): Jermaine Johnson, Will McDonald IV, Micheal Clemons, Tyler Baron, Rashad Weaver, and Ja’Markis Weston
This group says six, but it is really five. Weston is more likely to be used as a special-teams ace versus whatever he contributes defensively.
Linebackers (three): Jamien Sherwood, Quincy Williams, and Francisco Mauigoa
This was a tough position to evaluate beyond the top three. Sherwood, Williams, and Mauigoa are all roster locks, but how many linebackers will the Jets keep?
It will be at least three, could we make it to four? Maybe five? We’ll get a better sense of that throughout training camp.
Cornerbacks (six): Sauce Gardner, Brandon Stephens, Michael Carter II, Azareye’h Thomas, Qwan’tez Stiggers, and Isaiah Oliver
This is arguably the deepest positional group on the Jets roster in 2025.
Jarrick Bernard-Converse was the toughest roster cut of this group. He is young, versatile, talented, and showed a lot of chutzpah last year. Will the Jets keep seven corners? That seems aggressive, so JBC ended up on the chopping block.
Safeties (four): Andre Cisco, Tony Adams, Malachi Moore, and Dean Clark
The top three of this group are roster locks with Cisco, Adams, and Moore, but there is an opening for a fourth player to take advantage of.
Jarius Monroe and Jaylin Simpson are the two to watch who could upset Clark for that final safety spot.
Special teams (three): Harrison Mevis (placekicker), Kai Kroeger (punter), and Thomas Hennessy (longsnapper)
