The New York Jets have trimmed some fat from the bottom of the roster.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed on social media that the team waived veteran defensive tackle Byron Cowart “from injured reserve.” Before the season, Cowart was expected to be a starter or key backup, Cimini added.
He suffered an ankle injury during training camp and, right before the season, was placed on IR. That meant he was out for the season unless Cowart and the team reached an injury settlement at some point later in the year.
The Jets Also Moved on From a Fan Favorite Pass Catcher
Cowart being dumped wasn’t the only move the Jets made this week.
The team announced on Tuesday, December 2, that they have signed cornerback Samuel Womack to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, they released wide receiver Brandon Smith from the practice squad.
“Smith (6-1, 218), who rejoined the practice squad on Oct. 25, appeared in two games this season. He spent the past two seasons on the Jets’ P-squad and was signed to the active roster ahead of Week 8, playing 8 offensive snaps in the Green & White’s win against Cincinnati. Smith also appeared in the Jets’ Week 6 loss to the Broncos. An Iowa product, he led the Jets with 10 catches during the 2025 preseason for 113 yards. Smith previously played with the D.C. Defenders of the UFL, and he spent time on the Cowboys’ and Cardinals’ rosters but did not appear in any regular season games,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen posted in a press release.
Jets Set to Debut Long Awaited Rivalry Uniforms
The green and white will be debuting their rivalry uniforms in Week 14 when they host the Miami Dolphins.
On X previously Twitter, the Jets revealed what the field will look like with the new painted end zones and logo at the 50-yard line at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets will embrace their alter ego, “Gotham City Football.”
The helmet is matte black with a patterned stripe, and the pants are Gotham Green with Black & Iron Ore stripes, the team describes on its website.
While the shoulder panel design is an ode to the “New York City manhole cover.”
“More than just a football team. Our origins were chartered based on this city itself. We have existed for decades, continually evolving to the heartbeat that surrounds us. This city is more than the skyline, borough, or landmark. It’s forged by those who stare down adversity. A patchwork of millions, rising together with ambition, promise, and pride. For us, it’s not about where you are going, but where you’re from. Every story has a beginning, and this is ours. This is Gotham City Football,” the team posted.
The Dolphins already wore their version of the NFL rivalry uniforms during the first Jets matchup in Week 4 on Monday Night Football. Strangely, the NFL opted for teams involved to debut their rivalry uniforms at different times in separate games, rather than simultaneously in the same matchup.
The team is selling select gear from this line on their website with special discount codes.
