Six games into Aaron Glenn’s tenure as head coach of the New York Jets have been nothing short of a disaster. There are several reasons for that, with quarterback play near the top.
Glenn has stood by his struggling signal caller, Justin Fields, despite his dismal performance against the Denver Broncos last weekend in London. Glenn’s postgame interaction with the media did little to quiet the noise surrounding his job.
Glenn’s future might be in doubt in a lot of people’s eyes, but not Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. He doesn’t think Glenn will be fired during the season or after it.
Patience Needed With Aaron Glenn
Rosenblatt reported that multiple team sources have indicated that owner Woody Johnson has mostly stayed out of the way so far. Patience is going to be a virtue for Jets’ fans.
“Let’s get this out of the way: Glenn is not getting fired. Not this season, and not in the offseason either,” wrote Rosenblatt.
“There are a few reasons for that, but let’s start with the most important one: Patience. Owner Woody Johnson, according to multiple team sources, has mostly stayed out of the way so far — he’s letting Glenn build the team, the culture, in his vision.”
Money appears to be another issue when it comes to Glenn’s job. Rosenblatt reported that league sources have told him that Glenn is making more money than Robert Saleh made. Paying him for the future not to be the coach is not something that Johnson would want to do now. Rosenblatt noted that patience is going to be needed while Johnson lets Glenn instill his vision of the team.
“Glenn, at minimum, deserves a shot at seeing it through, certainly beyond just his first season. Glenn said that he and Johnson “have had really good conversations” and that the Jets owner “understands everything that we’re trying to do,’’ Rosenblatt wrote.
Jets Look For First Win Against Panthers
After a game that saw Fields play historically badly against the Broncos last weekend, the Jets return home to play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. It was seen as a winnable game before the season started. Not now. The Panthers have been somewhat of a surprise this year, sitting at 3-3 through their first six games.
As for Fields and Glenn, it appears that the head coach is safe moving forward. The same can’t be said for Fields. Glenn was not entertaining the idea of having backup Tyrod Taylor start against Carolina. However, another rough start from Field may force Glenn to make a move.
“Listen, obviously everybody wants to make sure they have a winning record, but here’s the thing, a lot of things that were not (said) from the very beginning,” Glenn said. “We’re not talking about the Super Bowl, we’re trying to build a foundation of making sure we win consistently — and how do you do that? You just can’t throw things out there and just have an unstable foundation and expect for things to be just right …
“I know everybody wants to win, but nobody wants to go through the hard stuff, and that’s what we’re going through right now. We’re going through the hard times to put ourselves in positions to win.”
If the Jets can’t beat the Panthers this week, a trip to Cincinnati is going to be difficult after the performance Joe Flacco gave on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a bye, the Cleveland Browns‘ visit on November 9 might be the best chance to win a game.
Regardless of whether they do or don’t, it appears that Glenn isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
