Jets Could Make Polarizing QB Decision This Offseason: Analyst

The New York Jets have some big quarterback decisions to make this offseason.

ESPN’s Ben Solak made a different kind of suggestion for the team to consider.

“I don’t think it would be egregious for the Jets to enter next season with a QB room of Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and (insert middle-round rookie here). Fields was frustratingly cautious for the Jets last season, but most of the free agent options aren’t much better than him or Taylor,” Solak explained.

Run It Back?

The Jets potentially running it back at quarterback hasn’t been discussed a ton as an option this offseason.

Fields, 26, will turn 27 before the start of the 2026 season.

This past year, he started in nine games. With those opportunities, Fields completed 62.7% of his passes, threw for 1,259 passing yards, and had a seven touchdown to one interception ratio.

On the ground, Fields carried the ball 71 times for 383 rushing yards and scored four times.

Taylor, 36, will turn 37 before the start of the 2026 season.

This past season, he appeared in six games and made four starts. During those games, Taylor completed 59.7% of his passes, threw for 779 passing yards, and finished with five touchdown passes and five interceptions.

Taylor also added 143 rushing yards on 27 carries. The former Virginia Tech product added one score on the ground.

That Would Certainly Be a Choice

The combo of Taylor/Fields started the majority of the season for the Jets in 2025. They went a combined 3-10 as starters this past season.

Of quarterbacks that appeared in at least nine games last year, Fields finished second-to-last in average passing yards per game (139.9), per ESPN.

Are the available quarterback options attractive this offseason? Not particularly. Would they be better than Fields and/or Taylor? There is no way to guarantee that, but candidly, it would be hard to be worse than they were last season for the Jets.

Plus, how would that look for head coach Aaron Glenn? If he ran back the same quarterbacks that led to the worst passing offense in the NFL last season, that certainly wouldn’t help his approval rating with the fans.

Even if he brings in equally lackluster QB options this offseason, he at least has to try to shake it up. Doing nothing will display a level of complacency that would upset fans and potentially even ownership.

Solak’s Jets QB Prediction

“The Jets do have plenty of money to acquire either Tua Tagovailoa or Kyler Murray. Given the Jets’ intradivisional familiarity with Tagovailoa’s game, I’d be surprised if they go that direction (though, with Frank Reich calling the offense, the RPO game would work well),” Solak wrote.

“Murray seems like a more realistic option. GM Darren Mougey is a patient team manager, but he was also present for the Russell Wilson fiasco in Denver, and he knows how badly the Cardinals want to get out of the Murray contract. The Jets have a ton of first-round picks incoming and don’t need to hold on to their third- or fourth-rounders as preciously as other teams,” Solak explained. “If I had to guess where Murray ends up next season, this would be my spot.”
