The New York Jets have made a few roster moves ahead of the Week 1 contest versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Gang Green announced on social media that they have “elevated” veteran wide receiver Tyler Johnson from the practice squad. The team also placed starting right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on “injured reserve,” officially ending his 2025 season.

Johnson Re-Joining Jets on Gameday Roster Is Unsurprising
The former Minnesota product joined the Jets this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.
He initially made the Jets’ 53-man roster, but was released after a flurry of waiver wire claims. Johnson, being a vested veteran, was not subject to waivers and was immediately added to the team’s practice squad.
Johnson, 27, entered the league as the No. 161 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He has registered 76 receptions for 828 receiving yards and has scored four touchdowns during his career.
When general manager Darren Mougey had a state-of-the-union before the season, he mentioned Johnson as being a key part of the receiving corps despite being on the practice squad.
That was a massive breadcrumb that Johnson was inevitably going to be elevated from the practice squad.
Explaining the NFL’s Practice Squad Elevation Rules
“In each game of the regular and postseason, a Club may choose to elevate a maximum of two players from its Practice Squad to its Active/Inactive List without the player first terminating his Practice Squad Player Contract and executing an NFL Player Contract,” Over The Cap explained from the current CBA.
“Any player who is elevated to a Club’s Active/Inactive List for a regular season or postseason game pursuant to this Section 5 shall automatically revert to the Club’s Practice Squad at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the first business day following such game without being subject to waivers,” Over The Cap added.
In other words, Johnson will be on the Jets’ gameday roster for Week 1, but he will return to the practice squad on Monday, September 8. This is a temporary move NFL teams can make to fill voids on the roster.
AVT’s Season Is Now Officially Over
“Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Thursday that RG Vera-Tucker sustained a triceps injury this week in practice and will miss the 2025-26 NFL season. He added that the rehab is expected to take approximately seven months,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen posted in a press release.
Coach Glenn has not revealed what the team plans on doing with its starting offensive line.
In the preseason opener versus the Green Bay Packers, starting left guard John Simpson was ruled out due to a back injury.
The Jets kicked Joe Tippmann to left guard and inserted veteran Josh Myers in as the starting center. ESPN’s Rich Cimini expects that to happen with Tippmann replacing AVT in the starting lineup.
However, no official word has been shared by the Jets ahead of this Steelers game on their intentions.
